Inside, you’ll learn about:

Black and White, page 147
When we reduce an image down to the essence of light using only monochrome, the image is defined by shapes and textures. These have to fall on the continuum of the gray scale somewhere, and you must understand that there is a point when texture becomes too dark or too light and loses its definition.
Monochrome is the essence of photography, since it represents light on its own. If an image doesn’t work in black and white then it’s not going to be very strong in color. There are a few exceptions to this in the history of photography, but on the whole that statement is true.

Texture, page 225
In a two-dimensional composition, texture plays a very important role in how objects appear “real.” Without texture, things feel flat and removed from reality. We see texture in everything that has a surface. The texture of skin is extremely important in portraits. Without texture, snow would appear as large, flat areas of white. Texture is also what defines an object that is still visible in a shadow.
Texture is very dependent on exposure. If an object is not exposed correctly, the micro-contrast starts to change what we perceive as texture, and we lose the feeling of reality.

Rule of Thirds, page 242
If you take any image ground and divide it into equal thirds, both horizontally and vertically, you will get a grid like in the example shown. This is the phi grid. The rule of thirds indicates that points of interest occur at the points of line intersection. Most cameras today allow you to see this grid on the viewfinder so you always have a template to work with. The same could also be said for long horizontal or vertical subjects. You’ll have more interest lining these up to the third division.
