This converter does exactly what it promises—preserving both video and audio quality when digitizing old tapes. As someone with a treasure trove of childhood VHS-C tapes, I found this device incredibly straightforward for transferring memories to digital files.
Important Note: This is a recorder, not an automated converter. You’ll need to manually rewind and play each tape from start to finish for recording.
Key Observations:
Cables Included: The package comes with multiple cords (AV, power), which might seem overwhelming at first. However, you likely won’t need them all. In my case, I connected my Panasonic camcorder directly to the converter using an existing AV cable—no extra cords required. Audio transferred perfectly, and setup was hassle-free.
Storage Needs: Ensure you have a USB drive with sufficient space. For reference, my hour-to-90-minute tapes resulted in 2.5GB–3GB files. If you’re digitizing a large collection, opt for a high-capacity drive (e.g., 128GB).
Recording Process: Default settings worked flawlessly for me. Just remember: the device doesn’t auto-stop—you’ll see "SAVING" when the recording finishes.

This is one of the most convenient video to digital converters I’ve ever used — it totally meets expectations, and even exceeds them!
Just to be clear, I’m not a professional user. When it comes to video and audio quality, my standards are pretty average: as long as I can see and hear everything clearly, that’s good enough for me. I probably can’t tell the difference between more advanced specs, but that’s exactly why I believe my experience will be helpful for most people!
I’ve tried other VHS converters before — some were too complicated to set up, others constantly froze or corrupted my files. Every conversion felt like a gamble, and it was incredibly frustrating. Especially when transferring old VHS tapes, it would often fail halfway through, wasting so much time restarting and re-exporting…
But this camcorder tape converter completely surprised me! I’ve been converting dozens of old family DV tapes to digital lately, and so far, I’ve successfully converted nearly twenty of them without a single failure. Here’s my experience in detail:
1) Works independently — doesn’t tie up your computer
I love that it doesn’t require a computer! Just plug in the power → insert the flash drive → press record, and that’s it. I can even use my computer for other things while it’s converting. Super convenient.
2) Saves directly to MP4 — no second conversion needed
Once you’re done recording, the file is already in MP4 format. Just copy it and it’s ready to play — no more waiting for hours to convert! It supports both SD cards and flash drives. I prefer recording onto flash drive then pulling it out and transferring the files directly to my computer. So efficient.
3) Extremely easy to use — almost no learning curve
There are very few buttons, and the interface is intuitive. Even my parents could use it without help. I barely glanced at the manual — figured it all out in about five minutes.
4) Good video quality — old footage looks refreshed
Although old VHS tapes naturally have limited quality, the converted videos came out clear with accurate colors. There’s none of that grayscale or flickering issue I experienced with other devices. Since this is just a transfer and not a restoration, I’m more than satisfied!
A few tips:
Always press STOP on the converter before turning off your camcorder — otherwise, the file might get corrupted.
It’s a good idea to have two flash drives on hand — switching between them makes the process more efficient.
All in all, whether you are looking to convert hi8 8mm tape to digital, I highly recommend this converter! It saves time, effort, and isn’t expensive. Definitely one of the most worthwhile tech purchases I’ve made in recent years.
