Excellent and Reliable Solution to My Challenge

Excellent and Reliable Solution to My Challenge
This is the second time I've reviewed this product. This fingerbot was an excellent solution to an engineering challenge I encountered when fitting a mini-PC inside of a classic gaming console. The Switchbot was perfect — it fit well inside the confined space and allowed the machine to be powered on via remote signal — an added security benefit, actually. I've included three photos — one with the case together and two with the top open. The Switchbot is the black cube mounted to the front right corner of the miniPC. Setting it up was super easy, and it works splendidly for my purpose. Perhaps not an everyday use for the machine, but it continues to perform solidly where other mechanical means failed.

works exactly as described. It physically presses the switch, so it’s compatible with almost any light switch or appliance. App is easy to use and scheduling is reliable. Made it easy and convenient to automate my lighting indoor and outdoor specially when i’m away

Something this simple SHOULD be getting 5 stars, so I'll explain why I'm rating 3. I just wanted a Bluetooth bot that pushes a button with a tap of my phone screen. Seems simple enough, right? A Bluetooth module and a servo, with widget functionality that's been around for over 15 years. Even with a coupon, I know I vastly overpaid for what the component costs of this little guy are, which are probably around a dollar or two if that.

It was straightforward opening the box and getting the app installed, and hitting the button inside the app makes it work just fine. My ISSUE with it is, at every turn it's trying to get you to buy the SwitchBot Hub, and it actually removes some basic functionality from the bot without a Hub. I can weather some aggressive advertising just fine, but one of the most basic things you'd want for something like this, the ability to operate the bot from a widget on your Home Screen, doesn't work. The app has widgets, hell there's 17 different varieties of widget. But only the very first one lets you pick it, all the others say you have to have the Hub. And that first one? It DOESN'T WORK.

The only way you can get the bot to work is by opening the app, letting it load, and then tapping the button for the bot in the main screen. Some reading this might think I'm over-reacting, but c'mon. We're all here to be a bit lazy about pushing a button. I want the functionality that I paid nearly $30 for! I'm not paying another SIXTY DOLLARS for a dumb hub!

Edit: I don't want to be unfairly harsh with the stars. Still annoyed that widgets don't work, and I still think its overpriced for what it is, so 4 stars.

    Has 3 different modes:
    > Press: for buttons, presses once
    > Switch: for pulling, pulls once
    > Custom: can configure to press 1-10x or all the way up to endless. and has an On / Off feature – which was super helpful for my projector that has a one press for on and two press for off…
    Also has scheduling with times.

Make sure to test if it works where you’re putting it before taking off the adhesive cover.

This works perfectly as a sleep timer for my projector. I can watch shows and fall asleep knowing I won’t be running my projector all night.

See below for my original review. I originally left a 1 star review as I felt the item title and listing did not accurately depict that this is not a fully "smart" object on it's own. It does allow you to operate the device within bluetooth range, but you can not operate it fully remotely, without either an additional device from the company or building your own and using their API. So rather than $30, you will need to spend $95 (at current prices on Amazon) to remotely push a button when away from home (or wherever else you are using the switchbot).

Customer service reached out to me after seeing the original review and offered to send me, free of charge, the device that turns this into a truly remote button pusher. I received it promptly, set up was easy, and it works smoothly and as expected. The customer service rep also said they had made some changes to the listing to try making it a little more clear what this device can and can't do.

I still think it's a bit confusing, and again, am disappointed the company does not make the Switchbot fully remote from the start, again, especially considering you can get smart outlets and lightbulbs that are fully remote, integrate with homekit/etc. for $10 or even less (vs. $95). I hope they can update this product in the future so that 2 devices are not needed to do what these other devices can do in just 1 device.

    ___
I assumed this would be like any other “smart” item where you can control the device from the app, wherever you are. Not so. This item should really be called “Bluetooth button pusher,” not smart button pusher.

It ONLY works via Bluetooth. Meaning, it can only operate when you are in the vicinity of the device. If you are looking for something to push or switch a button remotely (in my use case- turning on a PC while away from home), as I imagine most folks who purchase this are- you’re out of luck. Turns out you must separately buy a $40 hub to enable that functionality. Or if you’re handy, you can program your own hub with a raspberry pi. But even that turns what should’ve been a simple, works right out of the package purchase into something a lot more time intensive.

“Smart” lightbulbs, smart outlets, etc. are $10 these days and operate *truly* remotely out of the box. SwitchBot has no excuse for not doing the same for this device, and it comes off as a bait and switch by not being clear that this is merely a Bluetooth device, and forcing you to pay a total of $70 for the functionality you expected with the original purchase.

Very odd device but it actually works with almost all kind of buttons if you install it properly. It’s very important that you test the function few times BEFORE sticking it in place. Luckily there are 2 adhesive tapes in the package you can use.
