This product looks a lot like the official GoPro Mic Adapter. It's the same size (so not compact at all) and it should match the official product otherwise. The problems are two: First, the construction is not as reliable as a first party GoPro accessory—my USB cable to the camera frayed at the device end within a few days of getting it with a Ulanzi vlogging frame within a couple of camera insertion/removals. Second, before that happened it was about a 50/50 when turning on the camera that the mic would record no audio, requiring a disconnect/reconnect to be recognized. Oh, power was getting through, so the thing was connected, it just wasn't recognized as a mic adapter properly.
Did I maybe just get a defective unit? Quite possibly. Normally I'd be inclined to give them a second shot at getting it right, but given how often people report the device-not-recognized problem with this accessory, nah, trying to save a few dollars here was just a bad idea in general. I intend to run with an external battery as well as a mic, and you can preserve your camera battery's life by not putting it into your camera and just using the external. Except I can't do that because I might need to disconnect the adapter after recording a test video to see if the mic is working.
The savings just isn't worth it. You'll be a lot happier buying the official product even if it costs more.
For completeness: I'm using a GoPro Hero (2018) with a Ulanzi V2—the plastic case that's everywhere if you search for Hero 7 vlogging case. The 2018 is the same size as the 7/6/5, and it's roughly got similar features to the Hero 5. One mic instead of three, slightly better camera module, some accessories like the WiFi remote won't work with it. Also I think the image stabilization is closer to the Hero 4, which is to say if that's important, get a gimbal.
Why am I using a cost-cut entry-level budget camera from 2018 in December 2025? Because I was trying to do this vlogging thing on a budget and made the mistake of buying an Akaso camera. The Hero 2018 was cheaper than t he Akaso camera and for 1080p it's altogether an upgrade—one that you can actually get your choice of mic for. Of course, the official GoPro Mic Adapter costs literally as much as I paid for the used GoPro, which is why I was trying to save a few dollars. Live and learn twice over.
