With the pending release of iOS 17 supporting a StandBy mode by tilting your phone to landscape, I wanted a MagSafe charger for nightstand use that would allow turning the phone in landscape without hitting the Apple Watch charger. I also wanted an Apple Watch charger that could charge with the watch in portrait orientation, as the ones which charge the watch on its side (MagSafe Duo for example) don't work with bulkier watch cases. I preferred one that uses the official Watch charging puck as third party chargers sometimes throw up errors on the watch.
On the charging front, I'm pleased to report the magnetic holding force of this charger is strong – not official MagSafe charger levels of strong, but enough to keep the phone solidly in place. The orientation of the Apple Watch charger holder plus the rubber ring around it helps keep the watch in place, even with a heavy metal case and band around it.
The stand is quite light, so I opted to sticky tac it to my nightstand.
Now for things that I wished were made clear prior to ordering this unit:
This is a regular Qi charger. That's 7.5W of charging, not the 15W with MagSafe (and possibly with the future Qi2 spec). (The charger for AirPods puts out 5W.) You're definitely getting a downgrade in charging speed coming from a MagSafe puck. However, if you've used a MagSafe puck, you'll know it gets quite hot when charging. The fan on this charger goes a long way for peace of mind knowing your device is kept cool while charging. Plus, charging at a slower speed helps to keep a battery healthy.
Speaking of the fan on the phone charger, the product description doesn't make it clear when the fan and light turn off. I've noticed the fan and light do eventually turn off, but it's hard to tell after what duration. Your phone will report 100% charged but it still continues to draw a trickle charge before it actually stops. It will not turn back on by pressing the power button at the bottom until you detach and reattach the phone.
This charging behaviour applies if your phone is well below 100%. I have not tested what happens if your phone is already at 100% and you charge it on the stand.
Since I use this for nightstand use only, I would've preferred an option to toggle the fan coming on by default, but personally I don't find the fan noise too distracting for sleep. It sounds like your neighbour across the street has a vacuum on.
With all this, normally this takes a review down to 4 stars, but I added a star to complement their customer support.
