I'm brand new to action cameras and got this for using on my Jetski.
I was going 55 mph and getting rocked by the water but the image stabilization was outstanding.
The app could use some work for user-friendliness. Can't get the wired connection to function, but tremendous camera!

Amazing camera. 4k 120 fps is beautiful. Nice integration with the dji app. Suction cup mount needs a pretty flat surface so it wont mount on my gas tank on my bike.

I've owned two much more expensive GoPros, the last being a Hero 7 Black. The battery lasts easily twice as long as the GoPro, and the image quality is outstanding. The IS is so good, video from a dirt bike in extremely rough terrain looks like it was shot from a drone, hovering through the woods. This is a really nice action camera with a great price point. My only gripe is a noticeable transition when reviewing videos when it starts a new file. The file size is capped around 4.7 gigs *I think. I'd prefer to have the entire length of video on one larger file, and I haven't figured out how to change this setting. I also shoot video with a Canon, and there is no noticeable glitch between the two (or more) files for longer videos, but there is a slight noticeable glitch when using files from the DJI. The wind noise is pretty bad, but I was able to easily fabricate using soft foam and hot glue a wind sock that works great.

Great camera! I really can't say a bad thing about it. The battery life is long and the camera has a lot of good functions I haven't even fully explored yet. It's had some bumps and falls and it didn't seem to have a scratch on it. Good buy!

I must say I was upset when I got this camera. It says it is waterproof and all the videos show that it is. What made me upset was I took it on vacation with me and I went snorkeling and I was not even in the water for a minute before it went out on me . I missed some great footage. I was totally upset it said waterproof and this happened to me. I sent it back and they gave me a new one but I bought and underwater housing this time. Not taking any chances. The camera has great picture quality and stabilization and battery life. I think DJi makes great products. I would not take it in the water without a underwater camera housing again.

First and last DJI product I ever purchase.
Let's start:
1. Updates typically break something on the camera or app. This in turn requires time to "find a solution", patch, and repeat.
2. They have downgraded the device via firmware patch. The have made the rocksteady image a lower quality that does not stabilize as much. The only reason I bought this was better stabilization than the Go Pro Hero 7. Now it is worse.
3. The device requires activated. Yes. Before you can use the device you have to go through a lengthy process to activate it which requires setting up a DJI account.
4. Requires too many permissions. To connect the camera to your phone you have to give the app access to location, bluetooth, and wifi. This in turn renders your phone unable to connect to the internet since the camera uses it. You do not have an option. If you wanna use bluetooth OR wifi you're out of luck since it requires both.
So just a short scenario for the above point: you took a nice video you want to share on the social media of your choice. Turn on wifi. Turn on bluetooth. Turn on location. HOPE that the app finds your camera as it is notoriously unreliable, then HOPE that after the app finds it it can actually connect. From there you have to use the obtuse DJI app that never let's you know of transfer has started to your phone because of how buggy it is. Now after all that you then get to go back through, turn off wifi, turn off bluetooth, and turn off location.
I wish I was making this up but sadly I'm not.
The Osmo Action and the Mimo app that is required is a prime example of one of two things:
1. Someone with an idea of a product but zero idea on how to do it.
2. Someone wants to gain access to as much as your device as possible to mine all the information they can.
And let's face it, DJI has been around long enough to know the game so let's guess which scenario is more likely.

-Dewarp özelliği sayesinde balıkgözü efektinden kurtulabiliyorsunuz. Video kaydettikten sonra bir photoshop programında bunu yapmanıza gerek kalmıyor. Kameranın kendi dewarp özelliği mevcut.
-Şarjı yeterli, ayrıca powerbank ile şarj edilirken de çekim yapılabiliyor.

-Görüntü açısı GoPro kadar geniş değil. Dolayısı ile göğüs aparatı gibi aparatlar ile vucudunuza takıp bisiklet, motorsiklet vs. sürmeye kalktığınızda GoPro gibi geniş açılı bir görüntü elde edemiyorsunuz.
-Uzun videolarda dosyalar diğer aksiyon kameralarındaki gibi 4gb parçalar halinde kaydediliyor. Örneğin 2.7k/30fps kayıt yaptığınızda yaklaşık 5-6 dakikalık bir kayıttan sonra dosya kapasitesi doluyor ve yeni dosyaya kaydetmeye başlıyor. Herhangi bir görüntü ve ses kaybetmiyorsunuz fakat dosyaları bilgisayara attığınızda kesintisiz görüntü için bunları birleştirmeniz gerekiyor.
-Rocksteady çok fazla kırpma(crop) yapıyor, %15-20 arası. Bu yüzden görüntü açısı azalıyor. Dolayısı ile eğer aksiyon çekimi yapmayacaksanız Rocksteady özelliğini kapatmanız gerek, böylece daha geniş açılı bir görüntü elde edebilirsiniz.
Great Camera

This camera records very good outdoor footage. The stabilization is great except for one oddity which I'll explain below. The options and features are very convenient and there's a useful app for controlling the camera when it's mounted on your head or something.
The camera is very much meant for outdoor recording. Indoors or in poor lighting the video becomes grainy and the quality drops accordingly. Outdoors or in good lighting the video is excellent. Given this is an action cam I think that is perfectly acceptable.
The stabilization is impressive. I can go jogging with it mounted on my head and while there is still movement it isn't jerky at all and it's moving much less than without stabilization, so the footage is good. I tried it mounted on my dog and was surprised at how well it did.
So far I have mostly used it for hikes on a head mount and it works very well. However here I found something strange between different modes. There's a hyperlapse mode that takes very sped up footage. I have it set to 15x so as I understand it's taking an image every half second and then stringing them together into 30fps video. Somehow this footage is ridiculously smooth. I've done a fair amount of testing on this where I record a walk at 1080 / 30fps (with Rocksteady) and speed it up to 15x and then I record the exact same walk on hyperlapse, and the hyperlapse looks like it's on a camera track while the sped up video is shaky and tough to watch. I have tried applying video editing (smoothing, motion blur, and cutting frames out) in different ways to the sped up video but I cannot get it to look anything like the hyperlapse video. I think the hyperlapse employs magic. This is a plus for the camera, but it also makes me want the same kind of smoothing on the regular video 😛
Another quirk is that the camera doesn't like sitting in a room when recording 4k/60fps footage. Mine overheated after about 45 minutes of recording in one spot in a room. I have done multi-day timelapses without issue so there's no concern there, and I've had the camera recording on my head for a couple hours outside on a hot day without issue.
The options for various image resolutions and frame rates are plentiful. Something to keep in mind is the file sizes for different combinations. Multiple resolution/frame rate combinations will use the same bitrates and therefore file sizes, so check online for a chart showing what's what if file size is a concern.
The phone app was a nice surprise for me as I'd somehow not known about it before buying the camera. It lets you connect to the camera to see the camera's current view and change the same options you have on the camera itself from your phone. This is of course useful if you want to change settings without unmounting the camera, but for me it's most useful to make sure the camera is mounted in a good position.
The connection with the app doesn't work unless I put my phone into airplane mode and then manually enable Wifi and Bluetooth, but my phone has dumb issues like this with other products so I'm sure it's my phone's fault and not the app or the Osmo Action.
Overall I am very happy with this camera and I'm looking forward to using it while snowboarding this winter.

Erfahrungen aus einer TV-Produktion

Wir haben im September 2019 zwei DJI Osmo Action neun Tage lang in Venedig eingesetzt und dabei 500 Clips in 4K 60fps mit einer Länge zwischen fünf Sekunden und drei Minuten gedreht; das entstandene Material umfasste 214 Gigabyte an Daten. Verwendungszweck war ein 20-minütiger Dokumentarfilm auf Senderniveau. Vorweg: Die DJI produzierte verlässlich und störungsfrei sendefähiges Videomaterial und konnte auch beim Ton überzeugen; wir haben den Einsatz nicht bereut. Das hängt auch mit der Ausrüstung und den Einstellungen zusammen; darüber berichten wir zuerst. Im zweiten Teil schildern wir unsere Erfahrungen und geben Tipps.
Die Ausrüstung
So gut das RockSteady-Feature der DJI Osmo Action auch ist: Ruhige Landschaftsbilder – um die ging es in unserem Film vor allem – erfordern in den meisten Fällen eine stabile Kameraposition. Oft griffen wir dazu auf den "Universellen Magnethalter mit Kugelgelenk 66 mm" von Bauer & Böcker zurück (nicht bei Amazon erhältlich) und befestigten die Kamera magnetisch an einem Brückengeländer oder einer Laterne. Andere Aufnahmen entstanden mit einem klassischen Stativ – in diesem Fall einem sehr leichten Reisestativ, das so verkleinert werden kann, dass es in einen Rucksack passt. Den Einsatz von ebenfalls mitgeführten Selfie-Stativen haben wir rasch wieder aufgegeben; die Kamera schwankte darauf zu sehr und wir konnten auch die erforderliche Höhe nicht erreichen.
Die weitere Ausrüstung: Zwei Ersatzakkus, ein externes Akkuladegerät, ein USB-Netzteil, ein USB-Kabel, einige Speicherkarten. Insgesamt wog unsere Ausrüstung 1,2 Kilogramm und kostete 900 Euro. Das ist in etwa die Wochengage für einen zweiten Kameraassistenten und gemessen am Equipment, das man früher für eine Dokumentation brauchte, ein Traum.
Übrigens haben wir die Ersatzakkus nur an einem von neun Drehtagen benötigt. Insofern hätten wir sie auch weglassen können. Viele Nutzer glauben, dass eine Kameralaufzeit (gleich Drehzeit) von 40 Minuten pro Akku wenig wäre. In Wirklichkeit ist das im Dokumentarfilmbereich viel, denn die meisten Außenaufnahmen dauern nur wenige Sekunden. Niemand nimmt in New York ein Yellow Cab Taxi minutenlang auf; zur bildlichen Übermittlung der Nachricht, wie Taxis dort aussehen, reichen vier Sekunden.
Der Einsatz von zwei Kameras empfiehlt sich vor allem, wenn eine Szene nicht wiederholbar ist und es daher fatal wäre, wenn ein Problem auftritt. Zwei Kameras produzieren aber auch zwei Perspektiven des gleichen Geschehens. Klassischer Fall dazu ist das Interview, bei dem ein Überblickvideo (Interviewer und Interviewte) sowie ein Detailvideo (nur der Interviewte) später beim Schnitt kombiniert werden. Da unsere Dokumentation keine Interviews enthielt, stand eher im Vordergrund, nahtlose Aufnahmen zu erzielen: Eine Gondel fährt unter einer Brücke. Kamera 1 nimmt sie aus Richtung Norden ankommend, Kamera 2 in Richtung Süden wegfahrend auf.
Sind Interviews geplant, gehört zu unserem Equipment ein Zoom H1n Aufnahmegerät mit einem Lavalier- (Ansteck-) Mikrofon. Grundsätzlich gilt, den Ton immer da aufzunehmen, wo er entsteht. In unserem Fall ging es aber nur darum, die akustische Atmosphäre mitzunehmen. Da die DJI Osmo Action kein Aufnahmegeräusch produziert, konnten wir auf ihr internes Mikrofon zurückgreifen. Die Aufnahmequalität hat uns positiv überrascht.
4K, 60fps, 80 MBit/s
Wir filmen, editieren und produzieren stets in 4K UHD (3.840 mal 2.160 Pixel). Erstens weil der Tag kommen wird, an dem man für Filmmaterial in dieser Auflösung dankbar ist. Zweitens weil die meisten Monitore und viele Fernseher bereits 4K wiedergeben können. Drittens weil ohnehin viele einen 4K-tauglichen externen Mediaplayer benutzen wie Fire TV Sticks oder Android-Boxen, die das Bild beim Abspielen in Echtzeit auf die niedrigere Fernsehauflösung herunterrechnen. Viertens weil 4K-Material die Möglichkeit bietet, im Bild mit einer HD-Auflösung zu schwenken, zu zoomen und Ausschnitte zu bilden. Fünftens: Weil die DJI Osmo Action anders als viele andere Kameras 4K-Aufnahmen super stabilisiert. Die Technik ist da – warum soll man sie nicht nutzen?
Speicherplatz auf SSDs, Sticks, Speicherkarten und Festplatten ist heute im Überfluss vorhanden oder kann preiswert hinzugekauft werden. Außerdem kann man das Endprodukt ja immer noch herunterrechnen; löscht man den Schnittplan und die Ausgangsdateien nicht, ist es der Film in passender Form für unterschiedliche Endgeräte immer wieder reproduzierbar.
Die Entscheidung für die Aufnahme und Ausgabe von 60 frames per second (fps) vermittelt ein flüssiges Bild und zusätzlich noch einen Spielraum: Will man Teile des Materials mit halber Geschwindigkeit in Zeitlupe wiedergeben, sind die Bewegungen mit dann 30 fps noch immer flüssig genug.
Dritter Parameter für die Bildqualität ist die Bitrate bei der Ausgabe. Hier gehen wir nicht unter 80 MBit/s – damit liegen wir leicht über dem von YouTube für 4K und hohe Framerates empfohlenen Wert von 68 Megabit.
Für und Wider
Grundsätzlich war unsere Ausrüstung natürlich nur geeignet, Weitwinkel-Aufnahmen mit nahezu unendlicher Schärfe zu erstellen. Benötigt man in einer Dokumentation auch Details, kommt man am zusätzlichen Einsatz einer klassischen Kamera mit höherer Brennweite nicht vorbei. Das Gleiche gilt, wenn man mit offener Blende ein Bokeh, also Hintergrund-Unschärfe, erstellen will, etwa bei einem Personen-Portrait. Nähe und Bokeh, beides geht mit einer weitwinkligen Action-Kamera definitiv nicht.
Grundsätzlich ist es heute aber problemlos möglich, in den Schnittprogrammen Aufnahmen verschiedener Geräte, Systeme (PAL / NTSC), Formate (4K, HD) und Bildwiederholraten (24, 25, 50, 60 fps) zu kombinieren. Wir setzen daher als Spezialkamera für Detailaufnahmen und für das lange kunstvolle Interview eine Panasonic LX 15 ein. Sie erstellt Videos mit den Brennweiten 24 bis 72 mm in 4K mit 30 fps, wobei sie mit der Einstiegs-Blende 1,4 keine Wünsche offenlässt. Sollen Makro-Fotos in den Film integriert werden, erstellen wir sie mit der LX 15 und legen danach im Schnittprogramm etwas "Atmo" darüber. Die entnehmen wir irgendeiner passenden Videoaufnahme der DJI Osmo Action. Einziger Nachteil der LX 15 ist, dass sie keinen Sucher, sondern nur ein (Klapp-) Display hat. Dafür ist der Preis mit 450 Euro gering, vor allem verglichen mit den aktuellen Modellen der Sony RX100-Reihe, wo wir über den doppelten Preis sprechen.
Nun stellt sich die Frage: Sollte man dann nicht gleich alles außer Action-Szenen mit einer Fotokamera drehen? Aus unserer Sicht nicht. Sie meisten Fotoapparate genügen (noch) nicht unserem Anspruch "4K 60 fps"; auch fehlt es oft an einer guten Video-Bildstabilisierung. Beides kann die DJI Osmo Action als "Spezialistin" besser, aber es ist wohl nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis sie diesen Vorteil einbüßt. Der nachhaltige Grund ist ein anderer: Gehen wir gedanklich die Situationen für die Aufnahmen auf unserem Venedig-Dreh durch, können wir uns nur wenige Momente vorstellen, in denen wir eine ausgewachsene Digitalkamera mit Objektiv hätten einsetzen können. Schon das Einstellen und Fokussieren hätte viel zu lange gedauert. Ein Video aufzunehmen ist etwas völlig anderes als schnell ein Foto zu machen. Man braucht Stabilität. Man braucht Ton. Man braucht einen passenden Ausschnitt. Man braucht die richtige Schärfe an der richtigen Stelle. Außerdem hätten wir ein wesentlich schwereres Stativ benötigt, damit die Kamera nicht umkippt. Wir hätten auch sicher nicht die teure Kamera samt hochwertigem Objektiv mit dem Magnethalter auf die Reling eines Schiffs montiert, schon wegen des Spritzwassers nicht. Außerdem hätte man uns mit Foto-Equipment samt Stativ sofort als Kamerateam erkannt.
Das Smartphone hat nicht ganz so viele Nachteile wie der Fotoapparat. Es ist sogar in der Lage, unsere hohen Ansprüche an Bildgröße, Bildwiederholrate und Bitrate zu erfüllen. Allerdings ist dort der Bildstabilisator die Schwachstelle – aus der Hand geht, im Hinblick auf TV-Qualität, praktisch nichts. Außerdem ist das Smartphone vielleicht noch mehr gefährdet als eine gewichtige Kamera, auf dem Boden oder im Wasser zu landen. Und nicht zuletzt müssen Sie bei jeder Aufnahme daran denken, den Flugmodus einzuschalten, sonst meldet sich WhatsApp mitten in der Szene hörbar zu Wort; jemand fragt, ob wir gerade filmen.
Natürlich gibt es noch eine ganz andere Möglichkeit, nämlich einen hochwertigen Camcorder zu kaufen. Aber da sind wir entweder bei einer Investition von mehreren tausend Euro oder wir bewegen und in einem sehr schmalen Segment kaum nachgefragter semiprofessioneller Geräte. Unser Vertrauen in eine Weiterentwicklung ist da nicht sehr ausgeprägt.
Das Fazit: Die Stärken der DJI Osmo Action abseits des Einsatzes beim Sport und in der Luft liegen in dem, was man "point and shoot" nennt. Man erkennt eine interessante Situation – zum Beispiel einen Gondoliere, der aussieht wie Meister Proper – und beginnt wenige Sekunden später mit dem Filmen. Wir haben daher auch außerhalb von Drehs immer eine Action Cam mit einem Mini-Stativ dabei. Im Winter passt sie in die Manteltasche, im Sommer findet sich ein Platz im Rucksack oder in einer kleinen Umhängetasche. Etwas Nettes zu filmen gibt es fast überall. Und wenn ein Foto passender wäre, filmen wir trotzdem und nehmen anschließend aus dem 4K-Film den besten Frame heraus. 3840 mal 2160 Pixel sind acht Megapixel; das reicht locker für einen Ausdruck im Format DIN A 4.
Die Nachbearbeitung
Bei der Nachbearbeitung gehen wir in zwei Schritten vor. Zunächst reduzieren wir (auf einem Windows PC) die einzelnen Clips mit der Freeware "Lossless Cut" um die Stellen, die auf keinen Fall benutzbar sind, beispielsweise weil sie eine Kamerabewegung durch die Bedienung der Auslösetaste am Anfang und am Ende der Aufnahme enthalten. Außerdem machen wir mit dieser Software aus einem langen Clip (beispielsweise dem Mitschnitt einer Fahrt mit einem Boot) mehrere kurze Clips. Die Software erledigt das tatsächlich "lossless", also ohne Qualitätsverlust. Die ursprünglichen Aufnahmen bewahren wir trotzdem auf.
Anschließend verwenden wir das Schnittprogramm Wondershare Filmora, um die weiteren Schritte vorzunehmen: Clips schneiden, kombinieren, um Sprach-Kommentare ergänzen, mit Musik unterlegen, um Bilder aus anderen Quellen (zum Beispiel Powerpoint) ergänzen, überblenden, untertiteln, exportieren. Das Programm ist (in der Version 9) sehr stabil und erlaubt es zuverlässig, ein Projekt immer wieder zu öffnen und zu verändern. Die Clips aus der DJI Osmo Action wurden von beiden Programmen problemlos gelesen und verarbeitet.
Die Erfahrungen
Vorweg müssen wir erläutern: Wir verfahren stets (bei allen Kameras) so, dass wir Akkus außerhalb der Kameras laden und Foto- bzw. Videodateien durch Entnahme der Speicherkarte auf den PC transferieren. Das heißt: Wir verwenden dazu weder eine App noch verbinden wir die Kamera mit einem USB-Kabel mit dem PC. Zu dem verschiedentlich geschilderten "Sudden death"-Phänomen der DJI Osmo Action, das ab und zu beim Anschluss an den PC entstehen soll, können wir daher keinen Beitrag leisten.
Wir haben mit der Kamera ganz überwiegend positive und nur sehr vereinzelt negative Erfahrungen gemacht. Allerdings sind die negativen wohl auf unsere eigene Fahrlässigkeit zurückzuführen. Verschiedentlich steckten wir die Kamera weg, noch bevor sie ausgeschaltet war – man tut gut daran, das Herunterfahren noch einmal zu kontrollieren. Und in einem Fall lief die Kamera – ohne Schaden zu verursachen – heiß, als wir sie als Traffic Cam im Inneren eines Autos einsetzten; sie schaltete sich dann selbständig ab. Zu den wirklich negativen Erfahrungen zählt die Spracherkennung; sie ist vom Niveau Alexa oder Siri noch weit entfernt.
Das Low Light-Verhalten der Kamera ist so, wie man das erwarten kann: Bei wenig Licht rauscht sie. Wohlgemerkt: Wir reden über Kerzen am Abend, nicht etwa Wolken am Tag. Allerdings ist der subjektive Eindruck des Kerzen-am-Abend-Videos weniger schlimm als bei einem Foto, das man aus dem Videomaterial generiert; das Foto wird matschig, welchen Rauschfilter man auch immer einsetzt. Dagegen ist das Video geradezu noch brauchbar. Aber das ist eine theoretische Frage. Jeder bei Film oder Fernsehen Tätige weiß, dass Licht für Videoaufnahmen essentiell ist.
Während das Problem Low Light nur durch externen Lichteinsatz zu lösen ist (eine Taschenlampe mit einigen Lumen reicht ja schon), konnten wir die Herausforderung "Pulsierende Leuchtstoffröhren" problemlos bewältigen. Man streicht dazu einfach vom rechten Rand in die Mitte und wählt die Einstellung M (manuell). Dort kann man dann mit unterschiedlichen Verschlusszeiten experimentieren; das Ergebnis ist unmittelbar auf dem Display zu sehen.
Alles andere war positiv. Alle 500 Clips in 4K 60fps mit einer Länge zwischen fünf Sekunden und drei Minuten waren brauchbar. Wir hatten keinen Ausschuss. Was will man mehr?
