Compact, high capacity Level 2 240V EV charger

5 out of 5 stars

Compact, high capacity Level 2 240V EV charger
If you need an EV charger as a replacement or you want to have another unit at your home, business, or vacation home, this can work out well. It’s a quality made Level 2 charger and it fits in a compact carrying case. The case is only 1 foot 2 inches in diameter, and it holds all you need. It has the standard Type 1 SAE J177 charging connector EV plug, and the charger has all of the indicator lights to let you know the status of your charge. The charger plug fits most cars in the US, however a Tesla will need an adapter. There is only the 240V plug, there is no option for 120V charging and there is no 120V plug. The case also contains the 25 foot long heavy duty charging cable. That extra length is nice to have. The charger is rated at 32 amps. The charger unit itself is compact and it’s easily carry with you in your car. You could mount it to the wall, but there is no mounting bracket or screw holes on the charger so you’d have to fashion one yourself. The indicator lights are on the front. They say it’s weather resistant so being out in some rain or snow should be fine, but I’ll keep it protected from the elements the best that I can. The charger will need the right circuit and power line to keep it safe. You’ll probably need a 45 to 50 amp circuit breaker with heavy duty wiring for the 240V circuit. That size circuit breaker is higher than many needed for electric dryers or electric ranges. You will also need to have a 35 amp NEMA outlet on the circuit too. The power input cable on the charger is 2 feet long, so you’ll have to set the charger in an area close to the available 240V outlet. All in all, this is a good replacement or additional charger with heavy duty cables and quality construction that’s small enough to carry in your car.

This Level 2 EV charger is working great for me on my Chevy Bolt and Chrysler Pacifica plug in hybrid. I have it set up as a secondary charger in our driveway as we already had a Level 2 charger set up in our garage for 1 car. The cord is longer than I need, but the flexibility is great to have. Charging speed is great and I have had no issues with the charger. Quality and value of this product are both very good as far as I can tell so far.

Note that this product requires a 240V outlet, which you may need an electrician to come and install before you can use this product. Standard electrical outlets in the US are 120V.

When discussing EV charging solutions, balancing portability and reliability can be challenging. However, the CALION 32 Amp Level 2 Portable Charger successfully navigates this issue, offering a compact and durable charging option that's won me over. This means that most EVs can expect an impressive 25–30 miles of range added per hour, significantly reducing charge times compared to Level 1 chargers.

The CALION charger is commended for its compact size and sturdy 25-foot cable, which allows for flexibility in both garages and driveways. While it lacks a digital display or app integration, the LED indicators are straightforward and provide clear, immediate feedback on charging status. Its rugged construction, along with IP55-rated weather resistance, gives users confidence that it can handle rain, dust, and extreme temperatures ranging from -31°F to 131°F.

Safety features are a strong point for CALION. It includes protections against overvoltage, overcurrent, ground-fault, leakage, and temperature issues, providing peace of mind during every charging cycle. Multiple reviews confirmed that the unit works flawlessly in tough conditions—like rainstorms or freezing temperatures—without overheating or tripping circuits.

I’ve been using this Calion portable EV charger for several weeks, and its dual-voltage capability has proven incredibly handy. Here’s my take:
    • Dual-Voltage Flexibility: Plug into a 240V NEMA 6-20 outlet for up to 16 A Level 2 charging—or swap in the included 6-20P to 5-15P adapter and run it off a standard 120V outlet at 12 A Level 1 speed. Perfect for home, travel, or RV parks.
    • Ample Reach: The 25 ft cable lets me park at various angles without stretching the cord or repositioning the vehicle—especially useful in tight garages or crowded campsites.
    • LED Status Indicator: A multicolor LED light clearly shows ready, charging, and fault states at a glance. No screen means one less snag—but the LEDs are bright and unambiguous.
    • Solid Safety Protections: Built-in overcurrent, overvoltage, ground-fault, and temperature sensors provide peace of mind on every charge. In testing, it shut down cleanly when the cord overheated slightly under a 16 A load.
    • Durable, Weather-Resistant Design: The rugged enclosure and cable jacket handle outdoor use—rain, light snow, or dusty conditions—without any loss of performance.
    Bottom Line
If you need a single, portable charger that handles both Level 1 and Level 2 charging with reliable safety features and plenty of cable length, this Calion unit delivers solid performance without unnecessary bells and whistles.
