The Good
– Sharp images when in bright light and given time to focus
– Small size, this module could be used in a wide range of projects
The Bad
– Audible thunk from the module as it snaps to focus
– Focusing is slow, even in bright light
– Poor low light performance
I'd ordered this ELP 8mp camera board as it seemed ideal to mount on my telescope for some budget astrophotography. However, when I put together a hasty test rig using a spotter scope and electrical tape to hold the module to the mount I discovered things were not going to work out as planned. At night the autofocus struggled with resolving to a sharp image even with bright objects like Venus. In the silence of the night I could hear a clunk as it shifted focus, and this also made me wonder if it would add too much vibration to the rig. I am pretty sure I could lock the focus at infinity with some fiddling, but this was straight out the box testing plugged into a laptop.
The next day I took it for a walk. The images are wonderfully sharp if you have good light and time to wait to let it focus. However, even moderate shade would delay focus or lead to blurred images. I now understand why it was recommended for monitoring tasks, where the focus won't shift much and the lighting will be consistent.
All in all I'm glad I ordered it as it is a useful addition to my parts collection, and I know there will be a project that needs just this camera in the near future. However, for now my astrophotography attempts will depend on me hanging a heavy DSLR off the telescope and remembering to lock the mirror up. A good module, but the slow focus and need for ample light means I can only give it 4 out of 5.
