A capable camera with reasonable auto-focus.

4 out of 5 stars

A capable camera with reasonable auto-focus.
This was 100% plug and play with a Windows 10 OS. This is going to be used in a lightburn setup. I was able to, with some effort get all sub .3 scores in Lightburn camera calibration with a less than ideal (eg. camera resting loosely and the calibration page being manually moved about), so it should do just fine with a fixed position and more stable calibration page readouts. The auto-focus did get 'hung up' sometimes in medium lit scenarios, but additional movement seemed to allow it to 'catch on' once more. I'll end up 3D printing a housing for this and affix it to something above my Laser engraver to get a consistent stability and image to work with for positioning.

The "alpcam" 8mp (as they call it, it's really ELP cam) is a rebranded 8mp autofocusing camera from ELP. It can go up to 1440p resolution, if given an abundant amount of light. Your video or pictures will be horrifically grainy if not. The camera has autofocusing which would be great for my application (3d printer time lapse/monitoring) if it didn't suck so bad. It takes a solid 15-20 seconds to focus and by then the print has moved and it needs to refocus, making time lapses a wobbly hideous mess. The camera even gets too hot for it's own good and starts lagging the video stream, so I soldered a 5v 40mm fan to the back of it and it performs way better, simply adding a heat sink probably would have went a long way though.

I plugged this into my computer and it immediately worked. I first took 3 test screen captures using Discord, above. The first two pictures are of a canvas print in the room, and the last is my 2k LCD gaming monitor.

Pic 1: Overcast, no lights on
    Pic 2: Overcast, lights on.
Pic 3: Picture of my monitor (Discord uses a "true mirror" effect, so that's why text is backwards)

Camera chip seemed to plateau at 130f /54.5c in a 73f/23c room. I would recommend people concerned about image quality add a chip heatsink to help keep image quality higher, but it stays well below "getting damaged" temperature which is well over 212f/100c.

The instructions and box are for different cameras, and this one does NOT have the "verifocal lense."

Adding your own polarizing filter for the desired result would help achieve a better picture.

When I just opened Windows 10 "Camera" I got a MUCH better video quality of my home, and a slightly better of the canvas print.

My only real complaints (considering this is a DIY chip and shouldn't necessarily come with things like heatsinks/case/lense/filter/ etc.) is the way it came packaged. It wasn't packed in an anti-static bag, it wasn't sealed by even a piece of tape, and the USB cable was plugged into it, adding stress to the socket on the circuit board. I would *highly* recommend immediately checking it's functioning when you order it, so you can return/exchange it in case it's broken (or was a returned item someone screwed up before returning it).

4.5 Stars. It's pretty good, if you know what to expect

This is a perfectly functional USB camera with auto-focus. The closest I was able to get it to focus was at about 2" or 5 cm, which is pretty close. It can focus far away, but it cannot zoom in on a distant image. I believe there is some sort of mechanical focusing going on in the lens, as I heard it click as it changed focus when using it with VideoLan (VLC).

This camera is just hardware – you need to supply the software separately. The image quality was highly dependent on the software that I used to run the camera. It worked great as a web cam for Zoom. The instruction manual suggested AmCap as a test system on Windows 11, which gave very good quality, especially close up. Another suggestion in the instructions was to use VLC, which I found to produce a very poor image, but that is likely just due to inadequate default values in the program, and is not a reflection of the hardware.

It comes with a 1 meter cable with a 4-pin connector going to the board and a USB A connector on the other end to plug into a computer or similar device. Programs identify this as a generic USB 2.0 camera, and as such, I believe it will work just fine with any USB compatible computing device, including Windows, Linux, and Mac computers, Raspberry Pi, and probably Android and iOS phones and tablets with some sort of adapter allowing a standard USB A connector.

If you need a USB camera for a project, this seems to be a good choice. I particularly like the close focus ability. I will probably be using this with my 3D printer via OctoPrint, or perhaps it will replace my laptop's broken webcam. It should do an adequate job for either task.

I will admit up top that some of the issues I encountered might be due to user error, but I will counter that by noting that the company claims the camera is "plug and play", so maybe not. My biggest issue is that I couldn't find a way to get the promised 3264×2448 resolution out of it. I tried several computers, different USB cables, different USB ports, and no software I was able to get it to show up on would even give me the option of going to that resolution. 1080P was as good as it was going to get. It is worth noting that the camera I got to replace this one immediately showed that resolution as an option in the same software, on the same computers, so I feel like there is a mismatch between the hardware and the item description. My second biggest issue was the autofocus, because it has NO IDEA what to focus on and switches to random things constantly, even when faces are present in the scene – it will focus on a face for a couple seconds, then switch to a tree three miles away, then to something small on the table in front of the person, then back to the person, on and on and on. My use case was for monitoring a 3D printer and generating timelapses, so having EVERY SINGLE FRAME be focused on something different was a complete deal breaker. And no, there appears to be absolutely no way to turn off the autofocus option (found out that was common with these kind of cameras). I even tried printing a photo of a face and putting it on the printer in the center of the image so that there was something it could recognize in a stable location (a trick I saw online for solving this kind of issue) …. nope. Just because it offers "face recognition" does not, apparently, mean it's going to use that information for any reason. Finally, the image quality is pretty bad, even for a tiny webcam. I've gone through a few cameras of this basic size and build, and this one is uniquely bad. I was forced to admit defeat and move on.
