Image quality comparo vs. X3

Image quality comparo vs. X3
First of all, this X4 does have better resolution than its predecessor, the X3:The first screenshot is from the X3, the second from the X4. The difference is most easily seen in the sign's borders; the X3 borders are rougher, while the X4 captures the borders more clearly. The colors also seem better from the X4, and the background is clearer.Overall my experience has been that the X4 has slightly better image qualilty than the X3, both in resolution and color accuracy, but it's an evolutionary improvement, not a revolutionary one.So if you need to save some money and get the X3 instead, that would be completely reasonable—the differences are minor and mostly only visible at when zooming into a small area, which is not a strong point for either camera—they both do better at wider angles. One thing I do like on the X4 versus the X3 is that your videos are stored in a single file each, regardless of length. With the X3, long videos are broken up and stored in multiple files, which basically stops the recording for a few seconds while it saves each file. This risks losing precious moments.Other than those differences, these are very similar cameras. The X4 is slightly larger, although not enough to really even be noticeable and you might actually find it easier to handle than the shorter X3.The X4 might also get a tad bit warmer, probably just from the extra power required to capture 8K, but that hasn't caused any problems for me in my testing to date. The company does recommend that you only capture in 8K if you have some breeze to help cool the camera, so bear that in mind also.Overall this is a great camera but so is the X3. If you can afford it, the X4 is cutting edge and I do recommend it, but if not the X3 is such a close second you're going to be happy with it as well, and both cameras benefit from excellent customer-support.The free Insta360 Studio app for post-production editing on your desktop is also quite good. Between that and Davinci Resolve I've been able to produce some really great short videos for YouTube (after a small learning curve for Insta360 Studio and a rather big one for Davinci Resolve). You can do some quick AI-guided editing right in the phone app and post directly to social media, but for anything more serious you'll need desktop video-editing software, and if you're not already experienced with that you'll have those learning curves as well.As always with these cameras, I strongly recommend to buy the insurance. I actually purchased two X3's, one with insurance one without. I eventually smashed them both:With insurance I got an instant refund and had a new camera the next day. Without insurance, I not only had to pay for the repairs (which were quite expensive) but it also took forever to get the camera back. I got the insurance on this X4 and it gives me tremendous peace-of-mind.I think that's it; I hope that helps you decide!

I have owned every Insta360 360 camera so far (with the exception of the Titan). This is the best one yet, as it should be. But it is a product that shows that Insta360 listens to their customers.
8K is the big headline item and it gives you the highest resolution yet in a consumer 360 camera. When you reframe (which is changing the view after recording – all in the amazing Insta360 mobile app or the Studio app for computers), you get 2.7k video. This is perfect for how most of this kind of footage is consumed – online and in social media.
The battery life is much better than before.
It comes with lens guards to make sure you don’t damage the actual lens – and the footage still looks great.
The overall photo and video quality is really really great!
Please note that it does not come with a selfie stick but is compatible with them to give you that awesome angle of the stick eliminated from the video. This makes it look like you have a personal cameraman or a drone with you wherever you go – but you actually have all you need in a pocket!
It is more rugged than the X3 and feels much better in the hand. The display is a bit larger than before and has gorilla glass to keep it in better shape for longer.
All in all, this is an incredible camera that I don’t like to reduce to just being an action camera – it is more like the perfect lifestyle camera because it’s ready and tough enough to shoot your life wherever you are.

So, I know it's made more for action and such, but I thought it would be fun to give to a bride or in a cosplay convention, which is why I wanted it. My hope was that I could hand it to the bride or groom and have them have some fun with it. It works well, but it's not perfect for that.

I like the build quality, it's easy to use, and a lot of times the video quality is great. It's definitely fun to mess around with the angles and zoom features like tiny world and ultra wide. Overall, I love the idea of the camera and will use it for certain situations.

Battery life seems great, I've used it for a couple events so far, and it's been solid. I bought a backup battery, but haven't needed to change it out during an event yet. Granted, I'm mainly a photographer, so I do use it somewhat sparingly. But overall I'd say it lasted for a solid couple hours of shooting with no issues.

The menus are easy to navigate, the touchscreen is responsive, and everything is durable on the unit.

A couple of quick things that I noted (again, these are issues really just in the way that I use it, might not be an issue for someone else):

    1) You have to use the Insta360 editor to basically set up the shots the way you want and then export them to the correct format to be used in something like Premiere Pro. Not unexpected, but if you think about the editing process, this doubles my time essentially, especially if I'm using clips from other sources which I normally do. If you're just using the insta software, it'll be fine, no worries… but when I have to pre-edit my edits…. it's just a bit of a drain on my resources. (And this isn't really the fault of the device so much as it's just mildly frustrating for the way I plan to use it).

    2) I noticed in some of my clips, a weird 'banding' effect (blur really) in certain situations. It made the footage unusable, and the worst part is I'm not sure where it came from. It's possible that it's not the fault of the device, but the lenses were clean and clear, unobstructed.

These are the only things that were an issue for me, and I'm sure that's being super particular and is unique to what I wanted to use it for. I still think it's a pretty awesome device and will allow me to create some cool shots for my uses.

For this 'review' I'm giving it 5 stars, but for me personally, It might be more like 4.4 stars because of my intended use. I battled back and forth over this or GoPro, and decided to try this as something different since I've used GoPros for a long time. Maybe I just need to do more experimenting.

After making a recent purchase of the Insta360 X4, I can say without a doubt that it has completely revolutionized the way I conduct my business and travel. For me, the most notable feature is the 8K video resolution, which provides a level of clarity and detail that is absolutely breathtaking in each and every shot. I am able to create 360-degree breakout rooms for professional training, as well as perform walk-throughs and guided tours of facilities, and the video quality is unmatched in all of these endeavors.

Because of its extraordinary versatility, the Insta360 X4 is an excellent choice for use in interior as well as outside settings. For the purpose of capturing immersive guided tours of cities while I am traveling, I utilize it. The resolution of 8K ensures that every street, monument, and cultural site is reproduced in exquisite detail, presenting spectators with an experience that is virtually as lifelike as possible.

The simplicity with which this camera may be operated is what truly sets it apart from others. In order to facilitate training sessions, it is a breeze to set up 360-degree breakout rooms, and the footage is so clear that it gives the impression that the participants are truly present. The same is true for facility walk-throughs; the level of detail that is captured helps to bring attention to significant areas that could otherwise go overlooked.

In general, the Insta360 X4 proved to be superior to what I had anticipated. One must have this technology in order to create 360-degree content of a professional standard, regardless of whether they are doing so for business or for fun. Strongly suggested for use!

This is wonderful for motorcycle use. When you use the motorcycle attachment you can get creative and put the camera wherever you like to get the best shot. The quality of the videos are amazing, it's waterproof, and a great value for your money! It does have some weight to it, but that's how you know it's made of good quality materials.

    A new 360 camera user

Reviewed in Canada on April 23, 2024

Probably the most unique video shooting camera I've used. Noting that my use case is a bit different as I don't really use this as an action cam but more for lifestyle/casual type videos to share with friends and family.

As a first time 360 cam user, I can say both the x4 and insta360 software are easy to use. The one "hurdle" a new user needs to be aware of is that there is a workflow involved (ie. You need to shoot, review, edit, export before you can share or upload) With that said, the resulting video is unmatched as it provides a unique perspective of not just what you wanted to shoot at the time, but rather your entire environment in the moment.

I ordered both the X3 about a week before the X4 was announced and kept the X4 as the added features are worth the extra few bills in my opinion. The 8k vs 5.7k is a noticeable difference in quality, and changeable lens guards give me peace of mind that I won't scratch the lens easily.

5 stars as it does everything I hoped it'd do, and the software is the easy and intuitive (thank you insta360 for making the app/editor free and not fall victim to subscription based software!).

I plan to edit this review should anything notable comes up (ex. After bringing it on a vacation or hiking/biking)

    The Best Just Got Better!

I'll admit, I am a big fan of this company and have been using their cameras since 2017 (although I do have a lot of cameras from other manufacturers too!). If I have the funds available (I skipped the X2) I will always invest in their new release as they are continually raising their game with every product launch and the X4 is no exception. I don't publish a lot of my stuff as I film for personal reasons and memories but I have attached an animated photo that took of a dimly lit interior of a historic Scottish church. Lots of cameras would have struggled in these conditions but the X4 excelled! The animation was also extremely easy to do in the Insta360 Studio software which is provided free.
I have mine paired with the Insta360 GPS preview remote so that if I have it mounted on a 3m pole I can easily see what is going on and start/stop recording a lot easier than having to hold a phone and do it (the remote can be wristmounted or attached to the pole). Used on its own, the camera is extremely easy to use. All of the automatic settings will give amazing results but if you want to dabble with the manual settings then you can get exceptional results.
I have been involved in photography/videography for many years and would give you these tips:
    1. Get to know your camera… make mistakes and learn from them. If you have an important occasion coming up that you want to record, then practise, practise, practise beforehand and double, if not triple check your settings before hitting record.
    2. Think about your mounts if used on a vehicle. You will see a lot of people complaining about breaking their selfie-sticks – almost every time it will be because of bad practice and lack of understanding of physics. Think about leverage, vibration and if in doubt, tether!
    3. Protect your glass. The X4 has removable lens protectors which should be used in an action environment. I have had eight 360 cameras over the years and have NEVER damaged a lens , even in action environments. From a photography background I have been brought up respecting my glass. I always shoot with a naked lens if I can as this gives best results but there are plenty of accessories available to help you if you are shhoting in a harsh environment.
    4. Respect your camera – although advertised as an action camera, you should still respect it as a piece of photographic equipment and show it some care and respect. The number of posts I have seen about lenses being cracked/cameras being broken as the tripod they mounted on fell over is amazing.
If you are looking at buying this as a first 360 camera then I absolutely recommend it. Easy to use and amazing, easily obtainable results.
If you are looking to upgrade from an X3 then I would say yes too (I did!) The X3 is awesome but the X4 is awesomerer!
