Not worth it - terrible image quality

1 out of 5 stars

Not worth it – terrible image quality
It took only seconds before I realize I'd been fooled. Even in great light, I wasn't getting anywhere near what I thought 48MP quality would be. Lots of ugly post-processing happening in-camera.

I would not recommend using this for Zoom/Teams/etc meetings. The resolution is far above what is needed! In fact, 1080 has been too much as everyone else is 720 or lower! I can be seen far clearer than my peers. My face is rendered is so well that they can see if I am due for a shave! My only “complaints” are the lack of a microphone and a stand. Both would make this the ideal camera for events like the painting classes that my better half takes virtually. One will be able to see each brush stroke in detail! It is definitely plug and play as my mini-pc and laptop both see it as a camera immediately! The case being metal means that a small drop will harm the floor more than the camera!

Testing this camera against Inswan2, I expected this camera better. It is not! The 13MP Inswan2 beats this camera in clarity, digital zoom and heat.
    (Tested with BlueIris5).
I expected with 48MP I can digital zoom in much clearer and also zooming in on text at the same distances while testing both cameras. Not the case. Inswan2 hands down the winner with 13MP versus this 48MP.
Proofs the point to me, Megapixel are not the same translated in the real world.
Also, ELP gets pretty hot in a relative short time
Sorry ELP, you need to go over your cameras again.

The quality looks very good in Windows, but in Rpi looks somehow pixelated, but way better than a normal webcam connected in an Rpi.

Reason why I will return, in my personal case:
    – Heat sink gets extremelly hot with either windows or Rpi in around 2min.
    – Also, when the camera is active, I can hear a small clicking sound every 5 to 20 sec. I believe it sounds like to much current is passing through something in the circuit.

Gotta return it.. I can't take the risk, because I wanted this camera for a commercial product.

Looking for a easy to install Jetson Nano Camera?
I use this ELP 48MP autofocus camera on my Jetson Nano and it's a simple install. I tested the camera on my windows laptop, Chromebook, MacBook Pro, Jetson and it worked wonderfully across the different operating systems. The camera has lightning fast focus so I tested it with some facial recognition code and it never failed to correctly identify the user after training. The camera comes in a metal housing with a nice long USB cord, and a standard threaded tripod mount. Every image and movie was impressively clear without fiddling with parameters or manual focus. (see attached closeup video). Fun solid little camera for your engineering lab.

    -Fast autofocus
    -Tripod mountable, metal case

The metal body feels very strong. I'd expect you'd damage the internals of the camera before coming close to compromising the metal body. The bottom has a threaded adapter so you can easily mount it.

The camera did not require custom drivers on Windows, and I would expect the same on Linux. All I had to do was plug it in and it was ready to capture.

On Windows, using the Amcap software recommended in the included setup guide, the images were quite grainy. Even if you were using this as a webcam I'd think the graininess would be much. This was the case even at the full 48MP resolution (8000×6000). It's a far cry from the clarity you'd get from a smartphone camera from the last couple of years. Given the price, I was expecting better image clarity.

The autofocus was pretty good in my experience. It focused quickly and was usually accurate at focusing on my desired target.

At the time of writing this review, the price of this camera was $139.99. As stated, the capture was quite grainy, and I was hoping for better.

This camera is quite interesting, it is one of the highest mp cameras I currently have and its less than 200$. The tradeoff is that the sensor and pixels are much smaller than any of my dslrs. It's not so bad however, at 1080p and 4k the quality is quite good, and you even get some bokeh on really close objects. The camera can get quite slow and quite warm at the full 48mp @5fps. After only a few minutes frame time grew exponentially, I stopped it when it reached 302 seconds between frames. This might be because of software. I was using SharpCap, an astronomy related program that takes many stills quickly. Besides that, this is probably one of the highest resolution camera modules I own.

4.5/5 but rounded up to 5/5

This camera allows an object to be in sharp focus within a few inches of the lens. The image is pretty sharp and doesn't have any noticeable barrel distortion. I found that the MJPEG default mode is not the best for the setup I was using because there is less compression of the image and so the data rate is necessarily higher. When in MJPEG mode, it would show a few frames, then stop. In YUY2 mode, it ran continuously, although the frame rate will slow way down when you run the resolution up. I took several still images, and zooming in were initially sharp, but fell way short of what I'd expect 48MP to look like zoomed in. it's perhaps equivalent to a cell phone camera of a couple years ago. Works reasonably well in less than optimal lighting.
Overall, not bad if you need a higher resolution than what a 1080 camera offers.
