I purchased this tablet the same day it was released!
I'll start with Pros and cons, and go into the story of what I was looking for and the main issue I had below.
Pros:
– No etched glass "rainbow pixilation" – its very clean and smooth with no weird light refraction happening. Please view close up photos.
– Buttery smooth, I really love the high pressure sensitivity (newer users won't feel a difference between 16k over 8k, but people drawing for many many years will noticed the difference immediately.)
– Crazy thin parallax, I forgot parallax was even a thing because of this device.
– Great design, buttons and dials all feel great.
– Quality hardware*: Does not feel cheap or clacky, it's just the right weight and solid form (*could use better adhesive, more on this later)
– I really love the feel of everything: the screen, the pen, the buttons, the dials.
– The third button is heaven, further the tool wheel it pulls up really increases the range of efficient work. Little extra ditbit is the driver UI is super clean, very nice touch.
– No diagonal jitter.
– 1080p is clean in this screen size.
– Huion customer service is A++++ (more on this below)
– I love it's thick tapered pen, I don't like pencil-style styluses for drawing tablets.

Cons:
– It can get a bit too warm on the port side after a few hours of use. Just warm enough to be uncomfortable, I have to take a breaks by turning it off to let it cool down. This usually happens around the 3 hour mark, and cools down quickly.
– Relatively dark screen, only gets up to 200 nits, which is a bit of a bummer, so its not very good in bright situations. I did found a workaround with this by playing with the settings, but you do end up with too much high contrast, so you are potentially losing some of the color range. I'm okay with it as it is a balance with making it power efficient, which I was prioritizing for this on-the-go setup. Simply don't sit in the sun and you'll be good!
– I feel it's almost a bit long for backpacking it, but it does have to accommodate the buttons and dials.

TL:DR: Wanted tablet for school, when in my past life was a professional artist so I was picky. The tablet received had a physical issue where the screen was pulling up from the case near the C-port, but Huion came through with a replacement, and I received EXCELLENT and VERY SWIFT assistance from Huions customer support team. They made the replacement process genuinely pain-free.

So as the title states, I'm a huge XP-PEN fan, all my models at home/for work have been XP-PEN.
So when I started school I wanted a graphic tablet for on the go.
My requirements were:
– Portability: Must be small but large enough, slim and lightweight
– Energy efficient: the lower the better, but enough balance for a bright enough screen
– A dial: I became spoiled with dials from XP-PENs pro series at home.
– Etched Glass Screen: I wanted the screen to last/not get damaged from tons of use, nor did I want to replace any screen protectors.
– Thunderbolt compatible, I wanted a single cable situation. It'd be embarrassing doing the whole 3-1 cable setup in the middle of class.
– Pressure sensitivity: I realllly wanted to get something with 16k pressure.
– Decent Color Gamut ranges: I could have gotten an iPad but I wanted the power of and access of a windows PC.
– Affordability would be cool but not a priority as long as it fit the above.

I researched for a week straight and unfortunately XP-PEN tablets didn't fit this bill all at once so I broadened my search to Huion. I found this tablet the night before it's release just as I was about to settle for something that didn't match enough of my requirements. The Kamvas 13 Gen3 hits ALL of my requirements!

When I received it and tested it, I was blown away. I was VERY satisfied, even with the slightly dark screen. It felt better than my at-home XP-PEN 22r pro which is simply insane to me. Even though I was just testing it, doing nothing serious with it yet, the tactile feel of it was so satisfying that I was sucked in immediately to drawing something much more in-depth than just a few spirals and writing.

A few days in however, I noticed that the screen was pulling up near the C-ports as I could see into the body of the tablet. At first I was worried it was from the heat of use, but my husband mentioned he saw it the first day initially. I quickly registered the tablet and submitted a support ticket. They responded to me within 24 hours, and initially asked if I were able to push it back into place, and if I was okay with that they could offered me a 30.00 refund for the inconvenience. The reason for why it may have been pulling up was that it may have faced some high heat on its travel to me. Makes sense as it was summer and Im out in the desert.
I wanted/need this tablet to last the next 2.5 years of school, so I requested a replacement after some hesitancy. They were able to assist me with processing a replacement easily. They sent me a return label, and sent the replacement after receiving back the original tablet. They were also very patient with me as I lagged a bit during returning the original as by this time, I was in my first rounds of exams in school. The label they sent, was VERY fast, so a day after dropping it off, they had the original back, and a day later I had the replacement on my door step through Amazon. To be frank, I was astounded and in awe by the number of people who assisted me with this process, so professionally and so quickly/efficiently despite the affordability of the device.

The replacement has a 0.01 difference in the screen calibration paperwork, and is in perfect working order – No screen issues this time around and is just as magnificent as the first one, sans screen lifting.

Anyways, this is a lot of words to say I'm a new believer/Fan and will certainly be recommending Huion products to my hobby and professional art friends and professional colleagues from now on!

I bought this pen display to take advantage of the advanced graphics capabilities of my desktop PC. I have been creating digital art in 2D for many years. I use a Surface Pro 8 for most programs and it works great for 2D projects. I have recently started learning 3d modelling and it doesn't do so great there. I do have a gaming PC that I use for games and VR applications and while it runs Blender and other modeling software like a champ, my gaming mouse doesn't offer the level of control I need. I did quite a lot of research and settled on the Kamvas 13 (Gen 3) based on reviews here and other sites as well. It has a high feature to price ratio. After using it for a week, I wanted to share my impressions and explain why I am returning it. Overall, it is great value for money and a great buy, it just doesn't fit my particular needs.

I want to start with what is great about the Kamvas 13 (Gen 3). Coming from a device that has 4,096 levels of pressure, the 16,384 levels on the Pen Tech 4.0 pen is buttery smooth. Once you get the display set up correctly (definitely not plug-n-play) the response and accuracy here is top shelf. I've used stylus technology across ecosystems and manufacturers for a couple of decades now and the level of control in this device really puts them all to shame. The stylus/pen while light feels in no way cheap. It is comfortable to hold for long periods of time and I have had no pain in my hands after hours of use. I haven't noticed any artifacts when drawing or painting here that have been common in the past on other devices I have used. To get this kind of performance at this size at this price point really is quite amazing. The display works equally well on the included adjustable stand or in a lap with cables that will NOT fall out as you move around. Again, if you are looking for a first or second pen display specifically, I don't think you can go wrong here and those that know seem to agree.

I liked the idea of the shortcut keys and dual dials, but in reality I haven't used them much. While they are perfectly functional, they were more in the way for me than helpful. They're a great feature if you are selecting tools from menus. I use keyboard shortcuts for everything and found myself frequently changing brush size or zoom level while trying to access my keyboard, which I had to sit behind the display and to the left. The irony is that the dials are not as responsive as I would like when trying to use them intentionally. As for the shortcut buttons, I found that I had to use more force to engage them than when using my mechanical keyboard which made me less likely to use them. Having an already established workflow with my keyboard and Surface dial made the 5 shortcuts inadequate by comparison.

Another selling point for me was the ability to "easily" switch between display mode and tablet mode. As this was my first pen display dedicated to desktop use, I wanted to be able to switch between the two modes. I wasn't sure whether I would want to look down at the display screen all the time, so I wanted the flexibility that the Kamvas offered. In practice, it is more difficult to switch between the two than is advertised. First, there are two ways to deactivate the display. If you are using a single full function USB-C cable to connect, you have to unplug the cable and plug it back in. Don't even think about the power button or the screen will turn back on. The power button seems to be far more sensitive than the shortcut keys. Getting it to work with the single USB-C cable is finicky enough without messing with it. This is the only method of turning the screen off for tablet mode that is mentioned anywhere in the documentation whether using the single USB-C (must be purchased separately) connection or the 3 in 1 cable (included). In my experience, when in tablet mode, using either connection the tablet would power down in 2-3 minutes without making contact with the pen, though I did not time it. This just started the song and dance of removing and reconnecting the cable again. Both USB-C ports are very snug, which is great when you want to put it in your lap, but a pain in the neck (and back and fingers and head) when it goes to sleep. I finally found, after searching specifically for it going to sleep, that the only way for it to stay on in tablet mode was to use the 3 in 1 cable and unplug the HDMI cable. Fine if you are a laptop user or are using a dock, very much not fine if you have to move things to access the HDMI cable on the back of your desktop PC.

These were at best minor annoyances that could be subverted fairly easily by introducing a dock onto the desktop. Where the real problem came in was the ergonomics inherent in using a desktop pen display and the low resolution of the Kamvas 13 in comparison to my 4k displays. Being disabled and a wheelchair user, I am quite used to sitting for long periods of time and spend a lot of time sitting at my desk and do so with little added discomfort. When I focus in on something, I often find that I haven't moved in hours. The first day that I used the display, I used it for 3 hours or so and had to stop because I developed a bad headache. It's allergy season here and that is what I thought it was, so I put my project on hold and went to bed early. Day two, I was able to work for 4 hours before a migraine set in and stopped my day completely. Day 3 after about 45 minutes use, the migraine was back and my neck and upper back were on fire. None of these problems were necessarily the fault of the display, but more the ergonomics involved. I feel I wouldn't have had the problem with headaches if I weren't trying to resolve a slightly fuzzy image on the 1080p screen which due to the texture of the screen. It feels great to draw on but is not as crisp as either of the IPS displays that I use daily. I tried different setups with my monitor both extending and duplicating the displays. When extending, I had to look down at the Kamvas the entire time and when mirroring my main display, the 4k resolution I usually work with was dropped to 1080p covering much of the work area with icons causing me to continually zoom and pan which slowed my workflow considerably. Eventually, I had to abandon the USB-C connection for the 3 in 1 cable and use it flat on the desk with the HDMI unplugged. Again, this is, from what I can tell, more a problem with the pen display format over problems with this display.

If you're looking for a pen display and this is in your budget, I'd say look no further. It says volumes that I mentioned that I am returning it in the first paragraph and I still rate 4 stars and recommend it.

TL;DR – If you know that you are looking for a pen display, and it fits your workflow and budget I can't recommend the Kamvas 13 (gen 3) enough. It packs a lot of punch for a low relative price and the Pen Tech 4.0 experience is buttery smooth.

Would not calibrate correctly

I bought the unit to use on Linux (specifically, Kubuntu 24.10). The calibration would not show up. I tried rebooting in both X11 and Wayland as well as generic Ubuntu. The system worked better under X11, but Wayland is the current and emerging standard.

My system will dual boot to Windows, so I tried to calibrate the system in Windows 11. It did show calibration, but after I celebrated, the pen was still over a cm off. Worse, the pen was celebrated so the actual touch point was hidden under my hand. It did not hold even this flawed celebration when I went back to Linux.

Not so much a review of the product but of the misleading information provided by the manufacturer. Although technically Mac compatible, they do not provide nor advise that you need an expensive Thunderbolt 3 or 4 cable to connect to a current Mac model. That information is buried deep in there website in a Q&A. "Strong Compatibility: Kamvas 13 (Gen 3) pen display supports a variety of mainstream software. It is compatible with Windows 10 or later, Mac OS 10.12 or later, and in the Q&A on Amazon it notes you need a monitor. The instructions included just tell you to use a USB-C cable, not a Thunderbolt cable. My daughter as a user loves the tablet now its finally set up, but as the purchaser I am totally unimpressed.
