Good value for a well built basic UPS

Good value for a well built basic UPS
We purchased two of these units on a trial basis to see if they would be suitable for backup power for the PC's on our service advisor line. Power failures during storms are common in our part of the city and even though the whole building is supposed to be surge protected, we have lost equipment from lightning. In my test, the TECH 650VA kept a basic PC and three 24" monitors running for 30 minutes at which point rapid beeping began warning that the unit was about to run out of power. A much larger UPS keeps our network and phones up for 30-40 minutes so this is a fairly good match and gives people plenty of time to make contact with customers and finalize some billing before they have to shut down. The sticker says Made in Philippines. The surge rating is not listed in the manual but the manufacturer website states 890 Joules. The battery that came in ours is a 5.5 amp hour RITAR RT1255H. From what I know so far, I think these are a really good value for PC backups and I'm going to go ahead and start rolling out more of them in our office.

Seems like a nice unit that I use to maintain internet service during a power failure.

I’m using the Staples Standby UPS Battery Backup, 650VA with my TV, cable modem, and Wi-Fi router. All eight outlets are surge-protected, but only four are battery-backed.

Rated at 650VA, this UPS can handle peak loads around 390–450 W at 120 V, but runtime is very limited. The battery is 5500 mAh, which works out to roughly 50 Wh of usable energy. That’s about 50 watts for an hour. That’s enough for essential low-powered electronics and laptops, but don’t expect to power a 600W desktop PC, let alone a space heater.

With my 300 W setup (85" TV + modem + router), the UPS kept things running for about 8–10 minutes from a full charge. Realistically, it’s mainly useful for short-term backup and surge protection—enough give you time to turn off heavy devices safely during an outage and be thankful they were protected from power spikes and surges.

With just my 40 W modem and Wi-Fi router, it ran for just over an hour in "real-world" testing (disconnecting from the power socket), which matches the expected runtime. Nice to keep the internet access going for a while.

Bottom line: this UPS is reliable for protecting electronics from spikes and keeping a few low-power devices online temporarily. It’s not for extended use or high-wattage devices, but it does its job and is very handy during occasional power interruptions.

Bugger and heavier than I expected but has to be better quality than Walmart crap. Even has 2 USB ports. Nice

This is a nice 8-outlet 650VA Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). All 8 outlets are surge-protected, but only 4 are protected by the battery. Upon receiving it, I plugged it in to start the initial 8-hour charge. While charging, I connected the included USB cable to my laptop. The laptop immediately recognized it.

Looking at the battery, it reports to be 5500 mAh. I let it charge for 48 hours before starting the test. To test the battery, I plugged my monitor, accessories, and laptop into the UPS and disabled all energy-saving features. This created about 45 watts of load. I expect this load to run for about an hour. I unplugged the UPS from the power to simulate a power failure and waited.

Immediately, a beep every 30 seconds indicated that the load was on battery power. At about 40 minutes, this was replaced with a rapid beep indicating the battery was near exhaustion. At 50 minutes, the UPS shut down. It didn't run as long as I thought it should, but 50 minutes isn't bad and gives the systems connected to it time to shut down properly.

Why it didn't run as long as expected is unclear. It could be that the DC-to-AC converter is inefficient. It could be that the battery is not truly 5500 mAh, but closer to 4500 mAh. It could be that the UPS's load sensor is being too aggressive, not completely draining the battery. Regardless of the reasons, it didn't live up to the 56-minute runtime it advertises for a 50-watt load. For that, I will ding this UPS one star.

Overall, this is a good UPS, comparable to other similar-sized UPSs I own from various manufacturers.

Measured battery runtime lower than advertised, but still a useful UPS

Giving it a 5- it works, came faster than expected, has the outlet openings going in a direction that works for what is plugged in (perpendicular to the edge) as pictured. Will let you know if it lets us down when the power goes out.

UPS appears to work well. It comes with a USB Type-B cable to connect the UPS to the PC, but I am not using it. The UPS comes with a user manual, but it doesn't have any instructions on how to utilize this feature of the unit. I looked for an online manual, but there is none. IMHO, that's rather lame not to have instructions online in this day and age.

This UPS is rated 650VA / 360W which should be enough for typical systems. My PC has a 750W power supply, but I don't think the power drain ever gets anywhere near that. The UPS will shut down if its rating is exceeded. Time will tell, but I don't anticipate any issues.

I plugged my printer and speaker system into the Surge Protection Only outlets. I plugged my PC, monitor, modem, and wi-fi router into the UPS outlets. Note the picture below: the modem and wi-fi had these larger plugs, but I was able to fit them, especially because the one plug had no ground or polarization. Just be aware. There are short extension cords you can get just to get around situations like this, if needed.

I did test the unit by unplugging it while everything was running, and it worked well. If this UPS is within the power requirements you need, then it should be a good choice, especially given the price point of this unit.
