Must-Have For Toyota Owners

Must-Have For Toyota Owners
These past few years, I've become familiar with the broad selection of OBD code readers on the markets in the consumer and professional spaces. This one is a thorough and comprehensive unit specialized for Toyota vehicles. Toyota is one of the most popular brands on the road, in fact I own two of them myself, so this tool will allow you to help not just yourself hut also neighbors and customers. Being able to gain some insight into what's going on with your car, and being able to help others with theirs, gives you a competitive and potentially cost saving advantage especially if you know your way around a toolbox. This rugged and well-constructed device is compatible with Toyota, Lexus and Scion models using the OBDII diagnostic standard, which generally means any vehicle built after 1996. While this won't help me with my inherited 88 Supra I'm keeping this in the trunk of my 2014 RAV4 at all times. I do actually have a diagnostic adapter for the 88 and I'm going to see if I can use this with it but I think any reader you connect to the adapter still needs to have compatible software. Carrying this in your Toyota is like money in the bank. We're no longer beholden to the dealership to reset the oil change reminder light. If your car requires battery registration, which is important for some newer vehicles because it helps regulate charging system output, you are now able to do this yourself at home. I can calibrate my TPMS sensors as well as confirm pressure and temperature readings; this and other features are accessed through the submenus under the "diagnostic" main heading. To display tire pressure, for example, you go into your system selection, scroll down to select TPMS, then call it up using the datastream option. Sensor calibration is a separate feature accessed through the "special functions" section. Note that this unit doesn't seem to offer access to dealer-level settings such as the lane-change signal flash number or setting certain tones and chimes as on or off, although it does offer access to review the current settings values. This unit may not be as fancy as the professional-grade diagnostic tools they use at your dealership, but it puts a wealth of information at your fingertips and helps level the playing field for informed car owners and shade tree mechanics. And honestly, I could easily see this being a useful tool in a professional shop environment as well.

The scan tool works excellent very good quality

  • Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2025

I bought the OBDMATE scanner for my 4Runner. I was hoping to be able to program the TPMS sensors but was unsuccessful. The tire shop that installed them was not able to program them either so I am blaming the aftermarket sensors and not the tool. But the OM701 can access the TPMS system. I like that I can view the transmission fluid temp so it will be helpful when I do a fluid swap. For the price I am happy with what it can do.

Okay it reads more codes and does more items than many cheaper models but it only works on Toyota brands. Obviously from the description you understand that the fancy features would only be for Toyota but this won't even connect to another car. It won't even provide the most basic OBD2 codes that a $15 unit would read on any car. This one is locked so that it will not function in any way with any car other than a Toyota/Lexus/Scion. In addition it is extremely slow to connect and to transfer the codes and data. They sell a model that does all cars, but it doesn't have the additional OEM features, so you would have to buy two of their devices. Instead, check out the Innova 5410 or 5610, they are much faster and far better in every respect including website and support.

I used this scanner on my 2008 Toyota tundra and it worked great!! I cleared some codes and it diagnosed a bad oxygen sensor for me which I was then able to replace and repair the correct one. I would recommend this scanner!!

I got this to read the transmission fluid temperature on my 2017 Highlander and 2017 ES350 so that I can do a proper drain and fill of the WS ATF every 25K miles. This does read the ATF temp just fine. However, it takes about three minutes of navigating through the menus and waiting for the "communicating" with the TCM before you are able to read the temp.

By the time you get this connected after a drain and fill at ambient temp, you'll already be in the temp range to level off the fluid. If you could save your vehicle on the device to eliminate some steps, that would be helpful. Being able to go straight to the transmission temperature would be a great too.

I haven't decided if I am going to keep this or not. I may just pick up $13 infrared temperature gun to check the temperature of the pan and try that.

    Lots of options

I'm a woman who knows very little about cars but knows how it feels to be ripped off by unethical mechanics, so I was happy to discover this car accessory so you can run your own diagnostics before you head to the mechanic and have an idea of what is going on. It comes in a sturdy padded storage case to store in your car emergency kit, and plugs into your car. There are tons of options – the main ones of interest to my simple auto understanding include oil, battery and tires – however, for the mechanically inclined, there are many more. Buy with confidence!

Perfect Tool for Toyota Owners & Beginners Too – Saved Me Time and Money

I’m not an expert when it comes to car diagnostics, and that’s one of the reason why I ordered a tool like this—to avoid unnecessary trips to the service center and save some cost for my Toyota. The OBDMATE OM701 turned out to be surprisingly easy to understand, even for a novice like me.

It connected to my Toyota without any issues, and the menu layout is straightforward enough that I could quickly figure out how to read and reset a few warning messages that were bothering me. Being able to clear minor alerts on my own felt great.

The scanner goes beyond just reading engine codes and works with multiple systems on Toyota/Lexus/Scion vehicles, which makes it more useful than the basic readers I’ve seen. Good to know the device can stay current via software update.

Overall: For someone like me who isn’t a car expert, this tool made diagnostics simple and helped me fix small issues on my own. If you own a Toyota and want to save trips to the service center, this is a great investment.

I really like this OBD2 scanner. It is easy to use, works quickly, and feels well made. I tried it on a Toyota and it connected right away with no issues. The menu is simple to navigate, and the screen is clear and bright. It gives you a lot of useful information about the car systems, including engine, ABS, and transmission data. I also like that it can read and erase fault codes without needing to use a computer or phone.

The extra reset features are what make it stand out from basic scanners. It can handle oil resets, electronic throttle calibration, battery registration, and other advanced functions that are normally only available with more expensive tools. The free software update option is another plus, since it helps keep the tool current without extra cost.

I gave it four stars because the instructions could be a little more detailed for beginners, and the interface feels slightly dated compared to newer models. However, once you get used to it, it works very well and provides accurate readings.

Overall, this is a solid and reliable scanner for anyone who owns a Toyota, Lexus, or Scion. It is great for DIY maintenance and troubleshooting, and it saves a lot of time and money compared to going to the mechanic for every small issue. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a dependable tool for home diagnostics.

Good OBD2 scanner for Lexus and others

Reviewed in Canada on August 28, 2025

Amazon Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What’s this? )

The OBDMATE Scanner is a quality scanner that works well with the three Lexus cars that I tested it with. It also worked on a couple of other non-Lexus cars I tested it with, but without the extra Lexus features.

The unit is well made with lots of rubberized protection to save it from all the bumps it will take and to make it easy to hold without slipping out of your hands. The display is fairly easy to read in well-shaded areas; however, we got background reflections when sitting in bright daylight. The glossy finish on the screen reflects a lot of light. There is a lot of scrolling necessary due to the small screen as only eight lines of text are visible at a time. The buttons work well to navigate, and the screen updates reasonably quickly while navigating around depending on what function you are activating. Some diagnostics can take a long time.

There is no way to create a PDF or export file of results to read on a computer. This is very inconvenient as I would prefer to read a comprehensive listing of all the values on a computer, then look at the scanner to read or reset certain codes. Many of these hand-held scanners do not provide this capability.

We tested the scanner on the following Lexus cars:

    1998 GS400
    2015 NX300h (hybrid)
    2024 UX250h (hybrid)

The scanner is not very fast doing some diagnostics and reading fault codes, taking several minutes to update. The 1998 GS400 probably has a slow interface compared to newer cars and would account for some of the slow reading. The NX was a bit faster, but not as fast as I have seen with other scanners.

The GS that had several modifications over the years had 7 fault codes that I expected to have. None are serious and I only use the car occasionally in the summer.

The NX did not have any codes, which is good as it is still dealer-maintained and I have had no issues with it.

The UX did not have any codes. It recently had the battery die due to a light being left on overnight, so we wanted to verify if there were any other issues. Nothing found.

Overall, I like the OBDMATE scanner. It gave me what I was looking for to be able to see what is happening with the car and to verify what the dealer is doing to it, or not, over time. I’ll be checking the scanner before and after the next service call. I sure miss a file export though.

Handy Toyota scanner that paid for itself fast

Reviewed in Canada on December 3, 2025

Amazon Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What’s this? )

I bought this for our aging Toyota instead of running to the dealer every time a light blinked at me. It connected instantly, walked me through the menus in plain English, and let me read and clear codes from the engine, ABS, and transmission. I like the chunky rubbery shell, it feels ready for life in a messy glove box. The screen is easy to read at night, less so in bright sun, and some scans are a bit slow, but nothing unbearable. My only real wish is support for more brands and a way to export reports to a computer.
