Great feature set and repeater mode works amazing for extending coverage.
I've been using the router for a while and I've been very happy with the connection reliability and coverage. The setup of the router was easy and straight forward as it was a guided setup as soon as I turned on and connected to the router. WiFi 7 benefits: I do have the router setup in an area that's relatively congested with neighboring access points and the WiFi 7 protocol has helped with the connection stability so I don't have drastic slowdowns or disconnections. I do have the feature enabled to use the wide channel width of 160mhz and I found that to be very helpful. For the 5ghz, I do see that it's utilizing the channels between 30-60 and for 2.4ghz it's using channels 5 through 9. The router works with all of my WiFi 7 enabled devices just fine, even with WPA3, and even my devices that have the 6ghz band (even if the router doesn't support it). I have all of them running directly off of the MLO SSID network and I disabled the independent 2.4ghz & 5ghz network. I appreciate that I can choose which networks to keep on so that the router uses less resources and I don't further congest the airwaves with more SSIDs. Features: I really love the feature sets included with the router. In the router settings I have setup: AdGuard Home, wireguard VPN, and encrypted DNS. For AdGuard Home, I set it up and it was easy to do. Since the router has 1GB of ram, I was able to use a large blocklist including the big OISD filter. I also have the router setup as a wireguard client so that all of the internet traffic from my devices go through the VPN tunnel. There is a convenient option to independently choose which devices go through the VPN tunnel or not. Then as for the encrypted DNS, there is a setting to be able to force connected devices to use a specific encrypted DNS provider and there's quite a few to select from. It's been very reliable as I did some leak test to make sure all of the DNS requests are to my specified servers and not through my ISP. Repeater mode: There is a repeater mode which is pretty useful. I have it enabled, just in case the wired connection stops working and the router would automatically switches when needed. The main ethernet connection is connected to my ISP modem and the repeater is connected to my cellular hotspot. The repeater mode can be used independently, without a wired internet connection. I've used it in this configuration for a bit a time and I've been very pleased with the results. Of course, it won't be as good as wired as the speed is a little slower, but it's very reliable and the connection has been stable to connect from the router to my main WiFi 7 access point. Both access points are WiFi 7 with a 4×4 MU-MIMO setup so they're very compatible and I can take advantage of the wifi 7 features. Overall, I'm very happy. The features works great and the connection reliability has been spot on. It helps with my disconnection issues and the coverage is far enough to cover most of my home indoors. The repeater function has been great as I can provide coverage to the middle and back of my home, when the main router is setup in the front of the house.

So I need to give some background on why I'm so impressed with this router. The TLDR is that it's super easy to set up, super easy to configure, and just works the way it should.

The backstory is that I've had both Comcast & Verizon internet since having kids sucking bandwidth since online classes during the pandemic. My gig Comcast couldn't handle three kids with online classes while I was on work-related video conferences most of the day and my spouse was doing whatever she needed to get done. So we added Fios to our Xfinity also at 1 gig and I've used that just for business. Now that the last of the kiddos have left the palace I don't need the dual internet services with failover any longer, so checked out the best offers from Comcast and Verizon and found I could get 2gig service for $10 less per month than I was paying for 1gig service, which was already about $35/mo less than Comcast 1 gig. So it was a cost-saving no-brainer giving me unnecessary incremental bandwidth and bragging rights, and the incentive to finally cut Comcast out of my life. I did my research and found consensus that the Fios routers were okay, but basic. This GL.iNet GL-BE6500 somehow made its way to my page and it was a logical solution for me to consolidate networks at my now necessary 2.5gig speed. I run two switches and decided to replace one with a 2.5g switch as well, after all…. we should have the right toys.

So after my 2.5g Fios upgrade I tested the VZ provided router and it was okay, but completely unconfigurable. So it lasted about 2 hours before I swapped it with the GL.iNet BE6500. Let me share my experience on the top 13 noteworthy attributes:
    1. This thing is set up to be completely intuitive and walks you through what you need to do to get it running.
    2. It has a WAN input to connect to your internet source, and then four LAN ports, the first of which is configurable to also work as another WAN port – more on that later.
    3. You can also use a cellular modem through USB (I did not test this), set it up as a repeater/AP (I did not test this) or tether it to a smartphone or modem (I did not test this either). I love the flexibility of this thing.
    4. There's 2.4ghz, 5ghz and MLO wireless if you have Wi-FI 7 devices. The wireless as with everything else is super easy to configure, each of the bands can be independently turned on or off, and each of the three bands also has a configurable guest network. Super easy and intuitive to setup.
    5. For each of your clients it identifies the IP address as well as the device MAC address. Each client can be individually blocked, or conversely, have the IP address reserved for that device as I have done with my NAS, Printers and other specific peripheral devices. It's as easy as a slide switch for each device.
    6. You can directly configure GoodCloud or AstroWarp under the cloud services tab. I don't use either, so I did not test this.
    7. There are seven different natively supported third-party VPN apps which are supported, as well as OpenVPN and WireGuard and TOR. Mine was natively supported and was able to be setup within 30 seconds, so all of my clients are now supported by my VPN.
    8. The router natively supports and helps you configure a broad assortment of plug-ins and apps. I haven't yet played with this, although one item which I immediately configured was AdGuard Home which is in the router firmware and does not cost a subscription fee. Utilizing AdGuard home takes over certain other functions such as DDNS and the like as you're then using theirs, but its smooth and free and limits your incoming adds and tracking.
    9. You can also configure USB-based SAMBA, WebDAV or DLNA storage, although since I already have redundant NAS on my network I had no need. Setup looks incredibly easy.
    10. There are Parental Controls and you can set up the local or GL.iNet version, or if you are a subscriber to Bark you can use their version. My kids had Bark through high school, but I have no reason to add parental controls at this point. I do wish I knew it could have been setup at the network level rather than the device level as my kids were pretty creative in using non-enabled devices to get around controls.
    11. This router natively supports both ZeroTier and TailScale. I don't currently use either, but will likely utilize TailScale in the future.
    12. You have your normal router configuration options such as Port Forwarding, DNS, your Network Modes, whether you want to enable IPv6, and of course Nat Settings in addition to other standard configuration options. Unless you either need to or know what you want to do, you really don't need to do anything, but if you do it's pretty self- explanatory.
    13. It has an option for Mult-wan. So basically you can configure Port 1 of the LAN ports to be an incremental WAN port and then set up the WANs for either Fallover or Load Balance depending on your needs. This also works with your thether or cellular modems noted in item no. 3 above. Again, simpler to setup than I've seen with other load balancers I've used in the past.
I'm sure I missed certain other options and configurability this has natively embedded, but it's amazingly powerful and configurable and world apart from the provider-routers I've utilized in the past.

So what's it like actually using? Well in my case I've been blown away by the 2gig speed vs. the 1gig. I don't really need it, but I'm really enjoying it – kinda like instant gratification on so many levels. And this GL.iNet router does provide me speeds greater than what I previously saw with the Fios provided router. I'm only a week in, but have configured for Failover with my two WAN's (while I still have Comcast), and it looks like it failed over for about 2 minutes at some point. I have my router going to my new 2.5gig switch, and have been receiving almost 2gig of speed consistently in my office. My house was pre-wired with Cat5 cable, but the speeds seem consistent. I needed to acquire a couple of 2.5g USB ethernet adapters for a couple of my machines, and they seem suitable. My old Comcast side of the network (still 1gig switch and devices) is now on a separate LAN output from this router, and I have put my Eero which used to run routing for that network into bridge mode and frankly find the Eero's slightly faster, although I'm probably imagining that. I only have one WiFi7 device and its great with this router, but will likely turn off the wireless on the router as I have a bunch of Eero's running mesh throughout the house.

Overall, I'm a massive fan of this device, and now of GL.iNet. This is a major step above the Fios-provided 2gig router, and has all of the configuration and add-in devices I could imagine. So far no hurdles, confusion, nor issues, and expect to be using this for the foreseeable future.

Reviewed in Spain on January 12, 2026

Amazon Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What’s this? )

Reviewed in Germany on January 24, 2026

Amazon Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What’s this? )

Been looking at the open source routers for ages and finally took the plunge. The software is amazing, easy to navigate with lots of powerful features to enable. Settings are simple for easy configuration or you can roll your sleeves up and try Adguard, VPN or even Tailscale connection.
The hardware is robust and solid with excellent specs.
This is the only router I need now, I’ve removed the Mesh system we had previously, power and hardware savings too. Oh and WIFI 7 is amazingly fast and strong.

    Potente, compatto e versatile!

Reviewed in Italy on January 19, 2026

Amazon Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What’s this? )

    Fibra ottica → ONT GPON
ONT → porta WAN (RJ45) del Router
    Router → Wi-Fi + LAN

    In conclusione,
    lo reputo UN OTTIMO ACQUISTO!
