High capacity Level 2 EV charger
If you need a quality EV charger as a replacement at a reasonable price, or you want to have another unit at your home, business, or vacation home, this will fit the bill. It’s a solidly made Level 2 charger with a 25 foot long heavy duty charging cable. That extra length is nice to have. The charging connector EV plug is the standard Type 1 SAE J1772. It fits most cars in the US, however a Tesla will need an adapter. The charger is rated at 50 amps. The charger unit itself is compact and it mounts easily to the wall. The indicator lights are on the front. They say it’s weather resistant so being out in some rain or snow should be fine, but I’ll keep it protected from the elements the best that I can. The charger will probably need a professional installation for the power. They recommend having a 70 amp circuit breaker with heavy duty wiring for the 240V circuit. That size circuit breaker is higher than those used for most dryers and electric ranges. You can either wire directly into your electric panel with a junction box, or you can plug into a 50 amp NEMA outlet. The charger has no plug included, there are just three wires, the black L1, the white N for neutral, and a green grounding wire on the input cable. There are 50 amp 240V plugs available on Amazon or at most home improvement centers that will need to be wired onto the power cable. The power input cable is shorter at 2 ½ feet. So if you’re planning on plugging it in, you’ll need to have the unit mounted close to the 240V outlet. Other features are the ability to monitor and control the charger with an app on your phone. They have a QR code in the manual so you can do the download. I’ve not tested this yet. I’m still working on getting the electric installation completed with a new circuit breaker and wiring, so I’ve not had the opportunity to use the charger. When I get the charger up and running there will be an update to how well it functions.

    So many benefits

    I’m somewhat knowledgeable on the DIY front and the installation looked easy. I had it professionally installed anyway to be on the safe side.

    That said, it’s been so awesome to charge at home during off-peak hours. I’ve been charging my Tesla at work and I appreciate the company’s encouragement to get an EV, but long weekends and vacation time often meant time at the charging station.

    I had this installed so it’s mid garage and the size is compact so it wasn’t an issue, and the 25’ cable allows guests to use this if needed.

    I really appreciate the app interface for the charger. There isn’t a display screen on the charger. The charger uses colored LED indicators but that’s generally it. Everything else can be observed and controlled from the sofa using my phone.

    It was summer in a desert area when we got this charger up and running. The garage gets very hot during the day, but this has handled the heat and has functioned flawlessly.

    The price point is definitely in line for top notch quality. Super happy we got this!

    This Calion level 2 EV charger is very basic, but it gets the job done. It uses color lights to tell you if it’s charging or fully charged. It has a nice 25-foot cable, so it can reach all the way around your vehicle if you need it to. It is one that you need to hardwire in, so it takes a little extra time to install if you’re starting from scratch, or if you are changing from one that plugs in. It’s a level 2 charger and charges at a decent speed. I would put charging speed squarely in the middle, it’s not the fastest or slowest. It says you can mount it outdoors, but I still think it’s best to put it under something or inside a garage. The only time I think having one outdoors in the elements is a good idea is when it’s a professional outdoor charger. I do think that it’s expensive for what it is, as it is lacking a lot of features that other less expensive chargers have, mainly a display with more information.
