Finally, the right remote.

5 out of 5 stars

Finally, the right remote.
FINALLY! It took purchasing and returning four different remotes before finding the right one. I needed a remote that would allow me to control my Fire stick as well as allow me to get ride of all of my other device remotes. With this remote I was easily able to program in the control codes for my LG Soundbar, Hitachi TV Roku and Blu-ray player. Taking 5 remotes down to a single remote that worked 100% with all devices. While I am very pleased with this remote. I would suggest a few enhancements to make it the perfect remote. It would be nice to have a backlit feature to make it easier to see at night or in low light. It would also be nice to have a remote finder option. Which I have seen in many other remotes and it is an extremely nice option to have when you have kids that walk off with and leave the remote in other rooms. That said, this is turkey a great remote if you are looking to combine several devices (including your Amazon fire stick) into a single device.

Thank you for your feedback

I bought this remote in "Fire TV Companion" variant. We have an LG 3D TV (for which remote is missing), a Samsung DVD Player, a Dish Network DVR, and Fire TV, in the setup. Since we don't have the remote for our TV, I have been using a Logitech programmable remote, but for convenience, we still continued to use all the other remotes as well. Basically we had 4 remotes lying around to control each device. Yes, Logitech can control them all, but there are two problems: (1) family never got familiar with it and always resorted to individual remotes and (2) navigating the remote to access various features of each product is too much work.

Fire TV (with its audio commands feature) can't be easily replaced by a universal control.

I can't believe this remote is being sold at $12 (at the time of review). Instructions manual is very clear and I could setup the remote in just a few minutes (maybe 15 minutes). Manual recommend you to program each device manually, I strongly agree with that. I tried to program it automatically, but the results were not great. After manual programming, the remote is fully functional.

Only feature I am missing is – Dish Network remote's skip back and forward buttons. Otherwise, everything is available including guide and recorded items. Use eject button on the left side to display recorded items.

Batteries (2 AAA) are not included. Battery compartment door uses tiny screws – you will need a small Phillips screwdriver.

    I highly recommend this product.

We have a SofaBaton F2 Universal Remote Attachment for our bedroom. We really liked the idea of having one less remote to control our devices. The SofaBaton F2 was similar to this remote as it allowed us to combine our TV remote with our Gen 1 Fire TV Stick remote. This was great until our Gen 1 Fire TV Stick started moving like molasses. Unfortunately, neither the Fire TV Stick Lite nor the Fire TV Stick 4K is compatible with the SofaBaton F2. We considered getting another SofaBaton U1 (which we have in our den and sitting rooms) so we could control the TV, the Fire TV Stick, and the DirecTV Genie in our bedroom. However, we wanted to see if there was something else out there that would get us what we needed without the U1/U2 programming overhead. This device appeared to fill that bill, and we liked the fact that it was a lot like the SofaBaton F2 in terms of form factor (a cradle for the Fire TV Stick).

One quick tip: The screws that hold down the battery cover were a little tight, probably too tight. One came off easily the second one did not and we were afraid of stripping the screw. We did finally manage to get it off but decided not to use them as the battery cover appears to hold just fine without the screws.

    Pros:
    – Fits our Fire TV Stick Lite remote perfectly.
    – Relatively easy to program (We had a false start because we were too eager to program it and missed some key steps in the instructions 😂)

    Cons:
    – The overall design of the remote should be recessed just a hair more to avoid accidentally pushing buttons when flipping from one side to the other. I don't think this is going to be a BIG problem, but I can see why other reviewers pointed this out.
    – When in Cable/Satellite mode on this remote, the power button only powers off the DirecTV Genie box (in contrast the power buttons on the OG DirecTV Genie remote will power off BOTH the TV and the DirecTV Genie box). Despite walking through DirecTV's settings for programming this remote to control the TV, when you are in Cable/Satellite mode on this remote, the ONLY TV controls we can use are the volume and mute. To power off the TV with this remote, we always have to switch to TV mode. (not a showstopper but not totally convenient either)
    – There are a few MINOR buttons on the Direct TV remote that are missing/lost on this remote. It would be nice to restore them (most notable the 30s reverse and 30 second forward buttons).

All in all it's not a bad unit. One thing that's cool is because this device serves as a cradle for the native Fire TV stick remote, we get Alexa voice command features. (Something we could do with the SofaBaton F2, but cannot do with the SofaBaton U1.)

First I will go over the fitment of the Fire TV remote:

I have an Insignia 70" Fire TV and the remote for it is between 1/4" & 1/2" longer than a normal Fire Stick/TV remote. I was able to modify the Fire TV remote by removing the lower 1/2" of the battery cover and the back cover of the remote. This allowed the batteries for the Philips remote to fit. I then had to remove some of the inner ribs of the Philips remote battery cover in order to fit over the front of the Fire TV remote. I know many are not willing to do this, but after programming this remote and realizing it was going to work really well with my equipment, I was determined to make it work. As you can see in the photo, I got it to fit and it looks fine.

Second, I will cover functional pros & cons I have with this remote.

    Pros:
    – This remote was very simple to program and it works flawlessly with all of my audio/video equipment. I was impressed that they added the audio priority feature.
    – I like the feel of the remote in my hand but I have seen other reviews where someone called it "heavy". I like that. It doesn't feel cheap.

    Cons:
    – There is no "all on" or "all off" function. If you are using 4 things you have to press the TV button then power, then the STR button and press power, then the DVD button and press power and finally you have to press the AUD button and press power. Then you have to do the same thing when you turn it off. This is a big mistake in the design in my opinion. This remote would have otherwise been a strong 5 stars for me!
    – The screws on the bottom that hold the battery cover on will not last long. The screws will, but the screw holes in the plastic will not. There should have been some brass inserts installed so that the threads will last longer. This is a sad cut corner by the manufacturer. Sad because it's cheap and it would add much more functional longevity to the product.

If you have a normal Fire Stick or Fire TV remote, this is an overall great choice at this price point. If you have a Fire TV remote like mine that is pictured in this review, it will not fit unless you modify the Fire TV remote. I understand that most people will not do that but I am an engineer and making things work is what I do for a living. Also, if you have a Fire Stick 4K, they also have the longer remote so it may have fitment issues as well. Just be prepared.

I hope this helps some people in their purchase and helps to prepare themselves for the fact that their Fire remote might not fit.
