Upgrading 1970s Stereo for Modern Music Streaming

Upgrading 1970s Stereo for Modern Music Streaming
We have my dad's old 1970s stereo in a built-in wall cabinet that’s wired to speakers throughout the house. I used to keep Aux, microUSB, USB-C, and Lightning cables in the stereo cabinet to fit all the different music devices over the years. But it sucked that whichever device was playing music would be unusable while tethered to the cabinet. The receiver came with a standard 3.5 mm Aux cable, but I needed a special 3.5 mm to 1/4 inch Aux to fit the stereo's available ports. I had an available outlet next to the stereo and an extra USB-A charging block, so I have it always charging to never worry about the battery. I read reviews that this causes static on the speakers when music isn't playing, but I haven't experienced that. No issues with wireless connection, even with the phone in a different room. The stereo cabinet has a thick wood door; connection was strong even with the door closed. The only downside is reminding people to turn up the volume on their PHONE FIRST before messing with the stereo volume.

Purchased mine almost a year ago and use it constantly for work in my older vehicles. Have used it nearly every day for 3-8+ hours at a time. Before this I had to plug in and unplug an aux cable every time I got in or out of my vehicle which was annoying and shockingly time consuming.

The device has a good range to it and if it does disconnect it reconnects as soon as I'm back in range. Only issues I've had with function I'm pretty sure have been the phone, not this receiver. I've gone through areas where someone was blasting such a strong signal mobile data stopped working but it had no effect on device function or sound quality.

The sound quality for music and other media is like playing a CD to my ears, plenty good for my needs. Voice quality on calls is good too. I do have to crank the volume when on a call but I think that might be a phone issue I haven't figured out rather than this device. I also have to raise my own volume sometimes but that's to be expected when your mic is a small one several feet away. Quick warning, if your phone does what mine does and immediately resumes your music after a call be sure to lower the volume again before the call fully ends. Going from a normal volume call to surprise full blast music is probably not good for your heart.

The battery life is fantastic. Most days it'll outlast my phone's battery handily. The only times I've needed to charge it during work has been on extra long work days. Usually just plug it in when I get home and shut it off when my phone reports that it's charged.

As far as the actual device goes it's nice and small, plenty easy to plug in however you need. When I first got it I stashed it in an unused compartment on my car's dash and plugged it in with an aux cable. In my truck I plug it straight into the CD deck with the provided plug. It's small enough you can easily hide it from prying eyes and still get full functionality.

For value this product has been worth every penny for me. Took needless tedium out of the job and helped me work faster and earn more money without having to give up my music or go back to CDs.

This item worked really well. It connected my phone to my radio with no problem at all. I did return the item because it does not work with my handlerbar controls. Great product besides that.

Great receiver. Fantastic portability, no problems with connection, battery lasts a long time and the controls are quite easy to use, I prefer having volume controls compared to the single button control other receivers have. I have no problems with static on the unit I bought. The latency is unnoticeable to me as well.

My only complaint is that the sound quality does seem slightly poorer than with a wired connection. There is good bass with this device but the highs seem a bit less clear when I compare it to my headphone’s wired connection. This is to be expected as wired quality will always be better than wireless, but I’ve used wireless headphones that sound better than my wired headphones with this device (even though with the wired connection they sound better than the dedicated wireless headphones). So it seems like the receiver is the bottleneck for the sound quality and not the Bluetooth technology itself. Despite this, out of all the bt receivers I’ve tried this is the best sounding one.

If Anker could make this product with just slightly improved sound quality, this device would be 10/10 perfect! But for now, it is still a great device and the best bt receiver I’ve tried yet.

Compact design. Performs as intended. Worth the money

  • Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2022

This works well. It easily connects to your phone and the sound quality is great overall. I will not be returning this one like I've done with several others.
    Considerable caveats:
In general, there's the expected need to turn volume up on both phone and car, and the expected adjustment within phone and app. But I find that when my phone's volume is higher and car's volume lower I get great sound presence. Volume adjustment between app content style (music on Spotify vs only voices on Castbox vs Newpipe, etc), but again the sound quality is good and I've come to expect this with all bluetooth-to-aux connectors.
Only thing I truly mind is that when car is set to aux and this device is plugged in, there's a super annoying static hum. I've had it on others, but since it hasn't occurred on all my past connectors it's worth the mention. It only happens when you're not playing anything, but happens regardless of whether your phone's bluetooth and this receiver are connected.
I'm a pretty conservative reviewer in general so only if it felt like Stevie Nix was riding shotgun would it get 4 or 5 stars. Awesome value for the price, feel confident you're going to bridge the gap between old/new tech device connectivity. For those about to rock, I salute you.

Great product. Still going after two years of use. Connects with either my Mac or my phone. Clear sound. The battery lasts for quite a while. I have a portable battery I connect to it to charge it if I need to, so that works, and it even charges while in use.

Ideal para integrar altavoces con el ecosistema de Google

Reviewed in Spain on June 4, 2025

    It sounds better than my headphone's built-in Bluetooth……. 🙂

Reviewed in the Netherlands on June 25, 2025

This tiny device is great! Who would have thought that this small rocker can provide BETTER audio over direct jack compared to the standard bluetooth on my headset………… I thought that the days of jack were over but this device gave it new life because the audio is SIGNIFICANTLY better and more stable when plugged in directly via my Bluetooth-capable headphones that also support direct 3.5mm jack input.

It is also very nice that the device can play audio while being charged. It means I can keep listening without the hassle of "I can not listen to anything right now because it is charging".

Overall, this little thing is very impressive and simple enough so I can 3D-print custom holders to attach them to headphones in better places.
