This was a really fun kit to build with my kids, who were very excited to see the robot draw.
First thing to know: this is not a precision machine. I had to squeeze every roller tightly against the rails when tightening screws to get it to the point of being usable, but the arm is not balanced so only about a quarter of the drawing area is actually usable. But it does kind of work, and it is a brilliantly simple mechanism implemented in the simplest way possible, which makes it a fantastic learning project.
The machine came with documentation and source code. I've tried to add limit switches, but the firmware doesn't implement them for core xy configuration. Nice that they include the source code, though I've yet to manage to successfully implement the home switches.
I ended up using bCNC instead of the included Candle, which I could not get installed properly on Linux.
If anyone figure out how to prevent the arm from leaning forward/backward across the length of travel, write a review and share how!
The gantry has play in nearly every direction. The instructions are poor but good enough. The software is old and jank – you will need to home roll something to make it work. Its basically useless to me because it has so much play in the gantry with no real way to fix it the rubber rollers are about a full 2-5mm from even making contact on all sides I thought maybe I was being dumb and needed to insert the piece a different way but after countless disassemblies and reassemblies I think I might just be sending this one back and getting a different one. I do not recommend this product.
