Smart, versatile robotic vacuum and mop
The Dreame L40S Ultra AE robotic vacuum and mop is an excellent addition to the Dreame family of robotic vacuums. The vacuum comes very nicely packed with extra vacuum bag, brush, roller and a small bottle of their cleaning liquid for mopping. The vacuum was extremely easy to setup – the large get started instruction sheet was right on the money with easy to follow instructions and graphics. Getting the vacuum on my WiFi and connect to my iPhone Dreame app was a breeze. My router runs both 5Ghz and 2.4 GHz on the same SSID and it has no issues connecting to it and updating its firmware. I did the quick 5-minute mapping and then an initial deep cleaning using their CleanGenius option in the app. It did a very thorough vacuum and then mopped the entire wood floor and the tiled bathroom floor. It further updated the map with quite a few details during the deep cleaning. It even got the layout orientation of the wood floor right as well was smart enough to recognize the bathroom on its own. It named my Study room the Living Room and could be due to it recognizing the couch perhaps. It had originally partitioned the Study room based on accessibility of the but the app allows easy merging of the rooms and assigning no-go are on the map. The center of the Study has a medium pile shag-like carpet and I was impressed to see that it managed to vacuum it very well without getting stuck. It would increase the torque on the wheels as needed when reaching difficult areas of the carpet and was always able to go in and come out – very impressive! My slightly older name brand robotic vacuum cleaner could never do that. The mopping ability is excellent as well. It has the ability to extend the mopping arm to reach the edges and corners very well and it showed as all the reachable corners and edges were perfectly clean at the end of the routine. My wife and I were both impressed at the amount of dirty water it extracted from the mops and put in the dirt water tank. I also did the Alexa integration which was straightforward but only had a very limited set of commands – still ok for my purpose. Overall, this is certainly a high-end intelligent robotic vacuum and mop with excellent functionality and ease of use. We like it a lot and see using it very regularly. Its accessories including third party ones seem readily available. The vacuum is competitively priced as well. Highly recommend.

    Had a Roomba i7 for years but had a part break and iRobot completely stopped supporting the product so got a new vac. Choose this one due to reviews and it seemed appropriate for my space. I have a 1025 sq ft 1/1 with mostly hard floors and this does a great job vacuuming and mopping. Had a dirty streak on the hardwood get completely cleaned up and floors have been great. Does a good job with carpet as well and sucks up my cats hair no problem. Make sure to clean the dirty water bin after every mop though, smell is terrible if you let it sit.

    AI cleaning feature is not the best imo, but that is fine you can do custom clean setup per room. The map UI is also not the best with dividing rooms/adding carpet manually. I suggest they take a look at how iRobot does their map in app. Robot struggles to clean entire home in one charge, but not an issue imo.

    Obstacle avoidance is great on this vac, truly better than I expected but not perfect. Will sometimes mistake white corners of walls as a cord and avoid it. Other than that it will avoid my cats toys and anything else accidently left on the ground that shouldn't be sucked up.

    Definitely worth the $600-$700 on sale.

    I'm really liking this vacuum and mop. It does a good job of vacuuming and having it mop too is icing on the cake. I have it on a schedule, so I don't have to think about it, and it even goes between wood floor and tile without getting stuck like my last robot vac did. My biggest complaint is during the initial set-up, just as the app reached the fast mapping stage, a window came up telling me I needed to update the software. I clicked yes and it updated, but it did not return to the fast mapping page and I could not figure out how to get this initial mapping done. Having never had a smart vacuum before, I didn't know how important that stage was, so I was very frustrated that I couldn't get back to it. I ended up using AI to help me get the mapping done, and it suggested I start all over with a factory reset of what I'd previously done. Not a big deal as I wasn't very far into the set-up, but still a little frustrating. Anyway, that got me back to the initial mapping and then the initial deep clean and all is set up.

    I studied options for over a month and chose the L40 Ultra AE over models from Roborock and Eufy. I wanted so much to like this as I don’t like to mop or vacuum and have two large dogs. Set up was easy and mapping was quick and seemed accurate. The problem is it doesn’t work well and, at times, it doesn’t work at all.

    I have an older Eufy vacuum only robot with 4000 PA and it picks up 2-3 times the dog hair as this device. Also the mopping was very poor. When one mop pad reaches out, there is a 3-4 inch area that is not mopped, as sometimes the mop pad would remain extended. I had it cleaning an area that is less than 1000 sq. ft. and it would work for an hour or so and need to recharge for 3-4 hours before completing the job. Most of the time it would just spin in one spot. It would do parts of a room and move on to the next without finishing the first room.

    Finally, after the fourth day, when it went back to the base, it would reach out one of the mop pads and not secure into the base without my assistance.

    Overall a very poor vacuum and mopping function that was equally bad. I returned it for a refund.

    Update

    Dreame customer service reached out to try to satisfy me for the poor performance of this device. While I appreciate their excellent customer service, the offer was not at all attractive and I have elected to move to another manufacturer.

    Dreame customer service reached out to me once again with a much better offer, but I had decided to purchase something else. While I am disappointed in the device I purchased, the Dreame customer service has been outstanding! In hindsight, I probably should have reached out to them when the device was working so poorly to see if they could provide options to correct the malfunctions instead of just shipping it back so quickly. Overall, I have been very impressed with their customer service. They assigned a representative to assist me and she followed up multiple times each day trying to assist. She has been outstanding!

    I’ve owned several Roombas… but this little guy is next level. I say this with all sincerity, and I rarely ever review purchases, that this could be my favorite purchase in many years. It’s smart in the best way possible, I never need to babysit it, the app is intuitive and high level functional. And mostly it does a great job, like shockingly great. Far above my low bar expectations. Expensive? maybe.. but coming home to spotless floors everyday is worth the money. One side anecdote, as I was unboxing it, turned it on just to get things rolling, I hadn’t even put it on the base yet, opened the app and the little guy had already LIDAR mapped the part of my house it had seen immediately after power on, amazing.

It even manages to pull up dog hair from my carpets, which is something most vacuums struggle with. I also like that it uses a built-in light in darker areas, which seems to make its cleaning path more precise.

    That said, I did notice one issue that could be improved. My entire floor is carpeted, and at first, I didn’t attach the two mop pads at the back. Without the mop pads installed, the vacuum couldn’t return to its base station at all. I had to put the mop pads on before it would dock properly. Since my floors are carpet, this isn’t very practical. It would be much better if the vacuum could return to the base station even without the mop pads attached.
