If I HAD this $22.00 Powered Hub, I could have saved FOUR DAYS of work and 127,000 digital images!

If I HAD this $22.00 Powered Hub, I could have saved FOUR DAYS of work and 127,000 digital images!
AMAZON VINE REVIEW of this FEMORO USB Powered Hub I ordered this $22.00 11-port USB Powered Hub four days after a catastrophic failure of a USB port on my desktop computer. Normally, a USB failure is an aggravation, this was more than that. This failure happened DURING the rebuild and recompile of an SQL database containing records of 127,000 digital images taken from the 1960’s to the early 1980’s. Most of these digital images were created from 35 mm slides using a slide scanner for conversion, then cataloging and matching TIME, DATE, and PLACE so the 24 or 36 slide rolls of film could be archived together to represent a place. In this case they represented a “DIVE” as these were mostly underwater pictures from dive sites around the world. It took almost two years to complete the digital conversion from Kodachrome© slides. My Plustek 8100 scanner holds a slide tray of five slides and takes 90 to 120 seconds to do each slide in the tray…times 127,000 slides from thousands of dives. Lots of hours to do lots of slides and there was a real danger that thousands were “LOST.” Not physically lost, just no longer findable in the mass of digital images. I also still have the 35 mm slides stored by the thousands in airtight bins. I did not have the heart to dispose of them. The thought of SCANNING them again was NOT conducive to my mental health. So, WHY did the USB fail? Because it SHARED power on the PC with two other USBs in a virtual “hub.” The PC has 8 total USB ports, two USB-C ports on the top and six USB-A 3.0 ports on the back. There are also two more USB-A ports on the motherboard for internal connection. Not enough juice getting to the three-USB hub. My database lost two tranches of images. One was about 6700 “orphans” and the other about 1000. It took four days of many hours a day to find, catalog, archive, compare, and recompile those images and since my first effort failed, I do not have an ORIGINAL SQL QUERY to compile against. LESSON LEARNED… As I mentioned at the beginning of this review, the minute I was finished cleaning up my mess I went looking for an OVERPOWERED USB HUB and promised myself that I would never do sensitive work on a standalone PC or laptop port ever again. As usual, AMAZON provides. Enter the FEMORO POWERED USB HUB. It has 10 individually switched USB 3.0 “A” ports and an 11th charging port with 36 watts of charge power. Plugs into the AC socket on the wall and has a FOUR FOOT USB cable to plug into the mothership computer. Looks great, feels solid, but time and testing will tell me if I have a winner. The TEST: I inserted EIGHT loaded USB Flash Drives from 16 GB to 256 GB plus TWO External HDD (1 TB and 4 TB) and put my depleted Pixel phone (at 22% charge) in the charging port at the base of the hub. I set everything in motion with the hub plugged in to a Kill-A-Watt reader that was plugged into the AC on the wall. I turned every switch ON and sat back waiting for SOMETHING to stutter, stop, cycle, or die. In short order I got TEN new drive letters on my monitor, and everything was going, doing, writing, or copying and flying along as though each one was the only one… (See attached pictures…and please forgive my messy desk. I have been busy, and it does not ALWAYS look like this…well, a little like this ALL the time.) My phone said it was “Charging Rapidly – and would be at 100% in 41 minutes.” I can live with 40 minutes from 22% to 100% with TEN other things happening simultaneously. I ran the test for 55 minutes while directing the drives to copy to and write from the PC and an 18 TB External Drive permanently attached to the PC. It all worked without a glitch of any kind and reminded me AGAIN that this $22.00 product from AMAZON (and FEMORO!) could have prevented ALL of this angst, aggravation, and anxiety. And the Kill-A-Watt never recorded a loss and only one surge above 120 volts from the line in power. The FEMORO Hub managed it ALL gracefully and trouble-free. For $22.00. Even though I am retired I do believe my time is worth something. Between doing the studio photography and being the IT guy for the neighborhood I COULD have been USEFUL somewhere ELSE while I was cleaning up my FOUR DAY mess that would have been prevented by a little forethought and the $22.00 (plus tip) that we spent for a pizza the other night. Full disclosure: That was hyperbole…the pizza was $28 plus tip. But the FEMORO HUB IS $22.00 at AMAZON and provided SAFE, MODULATED, AC power to all ELEVEN devices I plugged into it. It is now a permanent fixture on my still WAY TOO MESSY desk, and I am now seeking another one that can travel. Because THIS one will remain plugged in, and I am unlikely to use an onboard USB ever again. Would YOU if you KNEW this could happen? This FEMORO 11-port POWERED USB HUB is FIVE STARS! Five Stars for 10 INDIVIDUALLY SWITCHED USB Ports, one 36-watt charge Port, Modulated AC Power, and overamp, overvolt, and overheat protection built-in. I WISH I had it SOONER! Thanks, AMAZON! Excellent features. The manual could have been more informative, fortunately, chatgpt was able to explain everything. There are type c and type a ports. They are labeled with 3.0 or 3.2 or charging only ports. All ports except the 2 on the side (front next to the barrel power supply connector, and 1 on the other end) have toggle switches with on/off indicator lights. I like these better than the kind where you have to long press to turn off and short press to turn on. But they are more mechanical, so hopefully they will also last.

The one next to the power is the input connector. It's a type c, but there's a cable included with a c to a adapter on one end. For me, this means I plug this into my tablet, and it becomes the host for all the other usb ports. This let me plug in my dji flip and play 4k video files right off the drone, since the drone needs power and my samsung tablet wouldn't supply that by itself, hence why I got this powered hub.

The 3 charging ports can deliver 10 watts each (haven't tried with more than one charging port connected though) and they are labeled as charging. The one on the side is a QC type and it can charge my tablet at 20 watts. I don't know what the hub is limited to, rather I think the limit is the tablet. QC ports negotiate the rate. The charger will drop down to 10 w if the tablet screen is on – this is to not overheat anything. I'm not sure which of the two makes that decision, probably the tablet.

Anyway, very pleased. My dji drone presents as 2 usb devices (internal and microcard), and I plugged in 2 more usb sticks and was able to see and access 4 usb drives in the samsung file app. The 4k video played flawlessly so the speed is up to par.

I just bought another one to send to my son. If it lasts, then this is a great device. The price seems about right too.

Build quality is low, but the sheer number of ports makes up for it. Each port has a on/off switch – which can be a very nice feature.

Edit: This hub has gotten progressively more picky. It's to the point now that very few actually work. It doesn't like certain cords and it will work with others then quit. Cords were tested on other hubs. This hub is the problem. Do not recommend.

With so many things coming without a wall plug, these wall hubs are becoming absolutely necessary in every room. I started with just trying to move them around as needed but it’s just not practical. This power adapter has many receptacles which is helpful for growth. I don’t have all the ports full now but it’s good to know I have the option. This power adapter works well and is simple to use. It’s a slim design and can fit most any tight spot.

This thing lacks power… It can't even charge my phone on super charge using a single port. It will power low power items ok, but I haven't even attempted to use all the ports at once yet due to a lack of power… 5/10 This should be improved upon…
