I've been a photographer for as long as I can remember. I've used all types of cameras from 35mm to SLR film, graduating to various point-and-shoots, crop and full-frame DSLRs, and even consumer and professional camcorders. Despite my experience, I am by no means an expert- I just know my general way around any camera you could possibly put in my hands. Enter 2024, the era in which our smartphones have almost entirely replaced cameras and camcorders. I followed suit and have been using my phone as my primary method of taking photos and videos for many years now. My DSLRs are simply too bulky and cumbersome to travel with, not to mention the fact that they demand the attention of other people in both size/appearance and shutter noise. However, point-and-shoot cameras have improved quite a bit since the last time I bought one back in the early 2000s but I haven't had the need for one since because I lost motivation for my photographic hobbies. I tried to pick it back up after receiving a Canon Rebel XT as a gift but it fell flat again within a few years. After the last decade of social media obsession and its demise, photographing anything seriously has been pretty much dead for me. Then I had a baby. Soon after, I became a professional product reviewer. A little while after that, I became a small business owner. I've been using my phone to document my daughter's life for the past three years, occasionally pulling out my 5D Mark III for special occasions. I had no other choice but to also use my phone for my reviews, as well as any photos or videos I needed for business purposes because #lazy.Enter this little gem… I decided to give it a try because it was under $150 (compared to the $1000+ RP I've had my eye on for the last couple years) and seemed compact enough for my primary needs which are simply to take photos and videos of my daughter/business/YouTube without looking like *that* mom/content creator and using my phone like everybody else. I honestly expected something totally subpar. Based on appearance and feel alone, it looks cheap and feels even cheaper. However, due to its mainly plastic construction, it makes this camera super lightweight and easy to carry. I obviously can't speak for durability in the long run but it has potential- only time will truly tell. As for its features, it has every mode an expensive DSLR has (photo, burst/continuous shooting, video) plus a few extras (time lapse photo and video, slow motion, loop record, and a separate timed mode). Each mode has its own menu for changing settings such as resolution, time stamp, etc. It comes with a built-in fill light that I admit isn't great because it's located above the lens which ends up casting a shadow but can still be helpful if you have another light source handy. Out of the little box it came packaged in, it includes a hand strap, lens cap, UV filter, SD card, two batteries, charging cable, charging block, HDMI cable, and a carrying case. As for the quality of its images and videos, I would say they turn out decently. Photos are certainly comparable to smartphone capabilities (my s23 is 50MP while this camera is 48MP), and although tech beyond 4K is still being developed and introduced to mainstream media, the fact that it boasts 5K @ 30fps video is pretty impressive (my s23 is 8K @ 30fps for rear camera and 4K @ 60fps for front camera). It even has image stabilization and auto focus. Sure, my smartphone is a bit better in terms of numbers but I have zero memory left for any more photos and videos so this camera will easily solve that problem for me. No it's not by any means nearly as great as a DSLR or even your phone for that matter, but it gets the job done, simple as that. If you're looking to break away from your phone, this definitely helps. Overall a decent buy albeit just a tad bit pricier than what I would have wanted to pay for it, but it's not so far off that I want to return it.
